Bruce Hyderman, organizer of the Spyder Express Riding Group of Cornwall and Saturday ride for the CHEO Foundation, was very pleased with the inaugural trip down a fundraising lane.

“We’ve raised very well and I’m still hopeful that we can reach our target (of $2,500),” Hyderman said. “It was our first fundraiser, and I thought it was a great day.”

The group of riders formed a year ago and the members thought it was time to plan an event, so they held their first Ride for Tiny Hearts fundraiser at CHEO, which ended up having 27 Spyders (three-wheeled motorcycles) and a few motorcycles for a parade that brought participants to Prescott, for what was an 85 kilometer journey north to Kemptville, then on to Merrickville.

Participants to and from and along the way met dignitaries including Gauri Shankar (Deputy Mayor of Prescott), Nancy Peckford (Mayor of North Grenville) and Doug Struthers (Merrickville), all happy to support the effort .

“We’ve met some great people and they’ve really encouraged us,” said Hydeman, who also met with CHEO Foundation Community Engagement Officer Bob Ghosh to present the cash portion of the proceeds.

But there’s also online giving, and because Canadian Pacific has partnered with CHEO this year, with CP to match dollar-for-dollar donations, the event could ultimately raise $5,000 if the Cornwall Spyder Group can reach $2,500.
