Bhopal/Gwalior: Self-proclaimed godfather Swami Vairagyanand Giri aka Mirchi Baba has been arrested for allegedly raping a devout woman in Bhopal, the capital of Madhya Pradesh, police said on Tuesday.

The accused godfather was arrested at a hotel in Gwalior in the morning, Gwalior Police Superintendent Amit Sanghi said.

Based on a complaint filed by a devout woman, a case has been registered against Giri under Section 376 (Rape) of the Indian Penal Code, Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Richa Choubey has said.

The man-god was brought before the court in Bhopal and was taken into custody until August 22. According to the complaint filed on Monday, the accused man-god had raped the woman in Bhopal on July 17, she said.

The complainant said she was childless for a long time after her marriage and met Giri, who promised she would conceive through certain rituals, the official said.

The woman alleged the godman raped her when she passed out after consuming an offering he had given, she said.

The victim claimed she could not press charges immediately after the incident for fear of social stigma, the official said.

Notably, Giri had supported Congress in the last National Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

The man-god had organized a yagna for Congress veteran Digvijaya Singh’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls and announced that he would take “samadhi” (entombment) following a failed prediction of his victory.
