Amritsar, March 13

Two unidentified youths allegedly robbed a man after serving him “parsad” containing a poisonous substance, resulting in his death, at the Golden Temple complex here today.

Police have recorded a murder case against the two suspects and are analyzing CCTV footage from the compound. The suspects took the victim’s cell phone and a gold ring.

The victim was identified as Payara Singh, a resident of Kalanaur in Gurdaspur. The incident happened near Ghanta Ghar in the square of the Golden Temple.

Surjit Kaur, wife of the deceased, told police they came to pay homage to Darbar Sahib last night. She said after paying their respects, they sat near the plaza when two unidentified people came to sit next to them.

The suspects befriended the couple and identified themselves as Bittu and Gurdas Singh.

They claimed that they had come from Batala to pay homage.

The suspects then offered “laddu” as a parsad, which her husband ate, while she kept it aside. The victim then went to the urinal and the two followed him, Surjit claimed.

When Payara returned, her condition deteriorated. He was taken to hospital, but died on the way.

Gurmeet Singh, Post Officer (SHO), Kotwali Police Station, said a murder case has been registered against the unidentified people and further investigations are underway.
