Emma Raducanu’s fan base continues to grow with Nick Kyrgios describing her as ‘the champion’ following her first round victory at the Australian Open.

The teenager had a great start to her career reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon on her major main draw debut in 2021 and a few months later had a fairy tale run at the US Open, becoming the first qualified – male or female – to win a Grand Slam.

After starting the year outside the top 300 of the WTA rankings, she finished in the top 20.

And she continued where she left off in a Grand Slam on Tuesday as she won her very first match at Melbourne Park, beating former US Open champion Sloane Stephens 6-0, 2-6, 6-1.

And Kyrgios, who kicked off her Australian Open campaign with an entertaining three-set victory over Briton Liam Broady, applauded her on Twitter saying “She’s the champ!!!!”

During his post-match press conference, Raducanu talked about feeding off the crowd.

“I really wanted to go out there and start playing aggressive and start putting my game on the pitch,” the 19-year-old said.

“I felt like I was really enjoying my time here, especially coming out to practice earlier, I had quite a few people watching. I think the crowd that stayed quite late, we had a good time. I fed on that, that’s for sure.

The British No.1 will face Danka Kovinic of Montenegro in the second round on Thursday.
