A devotee returning from the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district died near the village of Jalah Majra in Machhiwara after a high-speed truck hit the minibus she was traveling in on Thursday evening.

At the time of the accident, the minibus was parked by the side of the road. Only the victim, Uma Devi, 40, from Lohara, and her niece, Amrita, 20, were in the minibus, while the others, including the driver, Mukesh Kumar, her husband Vinod Kumar, their son Jatinder Kumar, and her stepdaughter -law Kaushalya Devi, had come down to cool off. Amrita was also seriously injured in the crash.

The driver of the truck, Abhilakh Singh from Giaspura, fled after the accident. The plaintiff, Vinod Kumar, said: “The impact of the collision was such that Uma died instantly, while my niece was seriously injured. The truck driver got out and talked to us a bit, but fled after learning that someone had died.

Assistant Deputy Inspector Vipan Kumar, who is investigating the case, said an FIR has been registered under Sections 279 (reckless driving), 337 (one who injures someone by acting so recklessly), 338 (that which seriously injures any person acting recklessly or negligently), 427 (mischief causing damage) and 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code.
