In addition to the daily forestry school sessions, Mark will be responsible for the upkeep of the garden, helping children learn about watering and the daily care of plants, herbs and vegetables. It will also help teach woodworking in the lumber shed.

He is delighted to have been approached to implement the new forestry school sessions and looks forward to involving the children in many outdoor learning experiences.

He said: “For the past two years I have had the privilege of looking after the beautiful outdoor space of Back to the Garden in Broadheath as a freelance gardening contractor and I can see how great it is. loved and used by the children everyday.

“The implementation of the new forestry school approach was too good an opportunity to be missed and it feels like the natural next step for me to join the team on a permanent basis. I have always felt like part of the Back to the Garden family because my wife is the head of the nursery unit. She’s been there from the start and I know she loves it.

Forest Schools are a specialized learning approach with many recognized benefits, including opportunities to gain and develop confidence and self-esteem through hands-on learning and exploration experiences in natural outdoor environments. , especially gardens or woods with trees.

Back to the Garden Founder Jeannie Pickering added, “Child-led biological learning in the great outdoors has always been very firmly at the heart of our philosophy at Back to the Garden. Our children already appreciate a natural approach based on spending as much time as possible in nature and we aim to formalize this further with continued engagement in forestry schools and outdoor learning. Our children are really responding to this approach and it’s wonderful to see their development.

With a second site currently under construction on Whitbarrow Road in Lymm, Mark will also be involved in the garden design, landscaping and planting of the new nursery and, once opened, will split his time between the two forestry schools of the two places.

A freelance gardener for 15 years, Mark lives in Sale with his wife and two children. To help reduce his personal impact on the environment, he now commutes to work by bicycle. When not working, he enjoys a 5k park run on Saturdays, leads his local Cub Scout group, walks his Labrador and follows the Sale Sharks rugby team.

Based in Altrincham and soon to be established in Lymm, Back to the Garden is an innovative child-run daycare that focuses on active learning through outdoor play in a beautiful garden. Its philosophy of allowing children to be children to explore their surroundings, experiment with the outdoor play landscape and harness their own imaginations allows for a natural approach where each child develops at their own pace.
