Leeds announced on Tuesday that goalkeeper coach Marcos Abad has signed a new contract until June 2025 – and Leeds fans have responded.
Abad, 36, joined the club in the summer of 2017 – after the arrival of Victor Orta from Middlesbrough. Abad also joined the Teesside club.
Since then, he has been credited with the rise of Illan Meslier. The young Frenchman initially joined on loan from Lorient in 2019.
Entering the Leeds squad in 2020, he played on his debut and in the later stages in which the Whites were promoted to the Premier League.
Since then, Meslier has grown into one of the best goalkeepers in top-level football – signing a five-year contract himself. He paid homage to Abad.
What are Leeds fans saying as Abad signs new contract at Elland Road?
This is another essential part of Marcelo Bielsa’s coaching staff who has promised his future to the club. But that’s no clue that Bielsa is staying.
The former Elche coach joined the squad before Bielsa arrived – and is not part of the Argentine core. Bielsa is also out of contract next summer.
Unlike Bielsa, Abad is clearly willing to sign a contract beyond the end of the current season. But nonetheless, it’s good news for Leeds.
Just looking at his development from Meslier over the past two years, Abad is worth the money Leeds pays him. Meslier’s value is soaring.
Leeds fans have taken to Twitter to welcome the club’s decision to tie up Meslier until the summer of 2025. One fan called it “good news”.
