Kavad transport follower dies, 4 injured in vehicle rush

Aurangabad, August 4:

A faithful Kavad bearer dies while four others are injured as an unidentified vehicle rushed the group of devotees taking water in the Kavad from Ellora to Hatnoor on the Aurangabad – Dhule trunk road in the early hours of Thursday. The deceased identified himself as Sharad Balchand Muthe (40).

Devotees from Shivrai village in Kannad tehsil including Sharad Muthe, Rameshwar Appasaheb Phalke 938), Kailas Devrao Tathe (45), Rohan Navnath Phalke (16) and Rishikesh Babasaheb Sable had gone to Ellora to get water and returned to the village on foot. after taking water in the Kavad. Around 5 a.m. an unidentified vehicle rushed them near Hatnoor. Muthe died on the spot while the other four were seriously injured. Rameshwar Phalke’s condition is said to be critical. After receiving the information, police and others rushed to the scene and took the injured to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH). Muthe’s body was taken to Harnoor Rural Hospital for an autopsy. He is survived by a wife, two children, a brother and a sister-in-law.

There is an old tradition in the villages of Harnoor, Shivrai, Tapargaon, Ruikheda, Jaitapur, Alapur and others in Kannad tehsil to bring water to Kavad in Ellora daily during the month of Shravan. The water is then offered to Abhishek in the Mahadev temple in the village.
