Global Motorsports Group turned this Porsche 911 GT3 RS into a rude rally car

Porsche’s 911 GT3 has been a favorite among Porsche enthusiasts since the 996 GT3 series debuted in 1999. Each successive version has set a new performance benchmark for track-oriented street cars, with the GT3 RS at the top of the list. We haven’t seen a 992 series RS yet, but the previous generation, introduced in 2018, remains one of the most knowledgeable driving partners on the road and on the racetrack. Of course, this is the perfect subject for intelligent tuning.

Global Motorsports Group (GMG), founded in 2001, is known for its work in improving the performance of Porsche, McLaren, Lamborghini and Audi models. “Our company was born out of a passion for motorsport and racing,” says James Sofronas, president and owner of GMG, located in Santa Ana, California. “We have a 30,000 square foot facility dedicated to serving our customers’ needs for maintenance, aftermarket performance tuning and turnkey customer racing programs.

Sofronas loves Porsches, so naturally GMG has developed a tuning package for the GT3 RS that is aimed at rally-oriented drivers who want to get the most out of the model while keeping it in line with the laws of the street.

Car enthusiast and collector Harrison Woodruff recently brought us his 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS, which was designed and tuned by GMG, for a show, story and spin. His Porsche looks a lot like a 911 GT3 RS, but it’s much more worrying. The 3M matte black casing showcases 1016 Industries’ carbon fiber bodywork. GMG’s formula for building the ultimate rally machine not only reduces weight with lighter carbon fiber panels, but improves performance with a variety of engine and suspension upgrades that Woodruff specified as part of all.

“The GT3 RS is a fantastic machine,” says Woodruff, “and we’re really happy with the way our partners have worked to make this remarkable custom even lighter and faster. It’s a really fun driver’s car, which is what everyone wants on a rally.

Engine performance and power benefit from upgrades from Gintani, the Los Angeles-based specialty store whose tuning increases horsepower to over 580bhp. The straight pipe manifolds further improve efficiency and Porsche’s factory mufflers have been removed to further boost the overall power of the machine. Producing a rugged engine note with even more edge than with the stock exhaust system, GMG’s revised GT3 RS drew a lot of attention when it entered our parking lot, largely because of ‘a rear spoiler that would make an albatross green with envy.

Together, the fender and front splitter, each supplied by Dundon Motorsports, provide even greater on-road stability and fierce downforce, while contributing to the vehicle’s more precise handling. Still, ground clearance is manageable on city streets, especially in conjunction with the factory axle lift system, a smart option for any GT3 owner who wants to keep the front end intact.

GMG racing mirrors replace the factory ones and allow a large screen view of objects. Through its 9 Design division, 1016 Industries has integrated custom carbon fiber components, including the hood and front and rear bumpers. The quarter windows have been replaced with acrylic glass to further reduce weight. These have a blackout pattern that allows a certain rear vision to the outside. Custom center-locking aluminum wheels, with a pattern imagined by Woodruff and GMG, also feature an intricate webbed design, while Lizard Green brake calipers stand behind black spokes.

Continuing the green theme, LEDGlow’s under-luminescent lighting complements matte black while making the machine more visible in the dark. Inside, a roll cage (in Lizard Green, of course) is a nice addition for rally and track. And out of respect for real-world speed limits, a scanner and radar system from Uniden keeps drivers on the right side of the law.

Woodruff’s Porsche is not a garage accessory, but is driven enthusiastically in rallies, and the owner is happy to rack up the miles. He has competed in the Savage Rally, Gold Rush Rally and Nu Rally, and plans to take part in next year’s Run to Monaco, which will pass through Rome, Tuscany and Portofino before ending in Monaco.
