Payday loan opponents have a new ally in the fight against predatory lenders: the leader of the 15.7 million-member Southern Baptist Convention (SBC).

“We cannot stand idly by while some of the poorest among us are being exploited by people who are just looking for a quick buck regardless of the havoc they wreak in the lives of others,” said Barrett Duke, vice president of public policy and Research at the Ethics and Religious Freedom Commission (ERLC) of the SBC.

The ERLC is one of the founding members of the newly formed Faith for Just Lending coalition, the Started earlier this month. Other members include the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the National Baptist Convention USA, the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), the National Latino Evangelical Coalition, and the PICO National Network.
