HAMTRACK, Mich. – In a big sports city like Detroit, football must fight for a share of the spotlight. But Tuesday (April 19) night you might want to check Detroit City FC against the Columbus Crew.
The game will be the DCFC’s first game against a MLS team in franchise history.
“It’s pretty wild,” said football fan Jacob Fuhs. “You can argue this is the greatest football game the state has ever seen.”
“It’s a big game for them, MLS,” said fans Steve and Mark Kolbicz. “Hopefully there’s wind and it evens the game.”
Team co-owner Alex Wright says the Lamar Hunt Open Cup is the perfect place to prove yourself against a larger-scale team. Tuesday night’s fight will be the third round of the tournament.
“It’s the perfect game for people who have heard of Detroit City FC because we’re playing against a team from the highest league in American football,” Wright said. “But it’s also an amazing night for us to show off the people who have supported us since day one.”
With a loyal fan base that will never stop supporting them along the way, the Detroit City Soccer Club will play at Keyworth Studium.
“They’re having a good year,” Mark Kolbicz said. “People thought maybe it was tough, but they’re winning you games now.”
Whether Tuesday’s game ends in a win or a loss, don’t expect Detroit City Football Club to remain the same.
“We started a women’s team for the last two seasons, basically during COVID,” Wright said. “We are developing our youth affiliates. We branch out and word is spreading in southeast Michigan that Detroit’s football team is the DCFC.
“You go back a little over a decade ago and you’ve never really heard of football in Michigan State,” Fuhs said.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN+ for fans who cannot make it to the stadium.
