Chelsea have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to sign Real Madrid star Casemiro as the Blues ‘consider an offer at the end of the summer’.
The Blues and Man Utd have followed each other in their bid to sign a new midfielder this summer.
Both clubs are known to be admirers of Frenkie de Jong, who is nowhere near leaving Barcelona after what looks like years of talks.
John Murtough risks being a reluctant poster boy for Man Utd’s summer of doom
The summer transfer window closes in just over two weeks, so Chelsea and Man Utd are wisely looking elsewhere.
United have targeted Adrien Rabiot but this deal is not an option with the club ‘unwilling’ to meet the player’s wage demands.
Real Madrid’s Casemiro is another player Man Utd are watching. They don’t do everything their own way, as Chelsea are also enthusiastic.
Speaking last season, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel suggested Casemiro is helping to ‘carry’ Real Madrid:
“I gave Karim Benzema all the praise. I said two years ago that he was one of the most underrated players in world football, but maybe not anymore,” Tuchel said via Sports Illustrated.
“He deserves praise for playing for so many years for Real Madrid. What he did to overcome the last stage for them, to bear the responsibility. The key role he plays for them as captain is now very impressive.
“You can see what’s going on with the team in his absence. Of course, an outstanding player and personality.
“It’s unfair at the moment, towards Toni Kroos, Luka Modric, Casemiro – the guys who have carried this team for almost a decade now.
“These are huge personalities, which I’m really a fan of – definitely not today, definitely not tomorrow!”
Casemiro has played just under 350 times for Real Madrid but his place could be under threat with Eduardo Camavinga and Aurelien Tchouameni now vying for a place in midfield.
Chelsea are a ‘longtime admirer’ of Casemiro and ‘would be interested’ in signing the 30-year-old this summer, according to 90min.
The report states that Chelsea are eyeing the midfielder ‘much longer’ than Man Utd.
After signing the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, Blues owner Todd Boehly is “now considering a late summer bid for the Brazil international”.
It’s worth noting that Real Madrid would prefer to keep Casemiro but they would be ‘tempted’ to sell him for £51million.
