CEBU CITY, Philippines— Take photos.
This is how this devotee of Señor Santo Niño of Cebu shows his love for the Balaang Bata (Holy Child).
Chang Euldan, 30, of Carmen, Cebu has been the official photographer of the Sinulog celebrations for six years now and for the past six years he has dedicated every captured moment to Señor Santo Niño.
Chang began his fascination with photography during his teenage years.
“During my teenage years, I started to explore the world of photography. At first I was mainly doing portraits and stage events, but soon after I started to use photography more and more as a creative outlet. Now it’s gone from something small to a serious passion, which occupies a large part of my life these days, ”he said.
It was in 2016 that he started his “panaad” for the Señor by taking photos.
“The former CEO of the Sinulog Foundation Inc. noticed and appreciated my photos, especially the queen of the festival, a highlight of Sinulog activities. It was then that he invited me to be the official photographer of the most prestigious and celebrated festival in the Philippines, ”he added.
Accepting the challenge of documenting in still images one of the Philippines’ most beloved festivals was an easy yes for Chang.
Why? Because he is no longer a novice in the long hours of walking and the long hours of work because he himself is also a former interpreter of Sinulog.
He was one of the interpreters of Sinulog for the municipality of Carmen in 2009 and placed third in the category free interpretation.
“I was a Sinulog interpreter before becoming the official Sinulog photographer. I still remember when we performed during Sinulog Mardigras at the Cebu City Sports Complex, where one of our rituals was to bow down on the platform, and I immediately kissed the ground, expressing my indescribable happiness at this. then in front of a huge audience watching over us performing, ”he shared.
Now that he’s still the official festival photographer, even in the new normal, he promises to continue giving Cebuanos beautiful photos to remember the Fiesta Señor celebration in 2022.
Wondering what is his favorite photo during this visit to the official photographer?
