Step 1

Blot

The first step in how to remove coffee stains is to press a white towel into the carpet to absorb as much of the coffee as possible. Repeat if needed. It’s important to clean the spill as soon as possible. Dried coffee stains are harder to remove. Do not rub the stained area—it may cause the stain to spread.

Step 2

Mix the Solution

Mix together one tablespoon of dish soap, a tablespoon of white vinegar or lemon juice, and two cups lukewarm water in bowl or bucket. Never use hot water—heat will set the coffee stain into the carpet fibers. Here are some great tips for how to get red wine, coffee and tomato sauce stains out of carpet.

Step 3

Apply the Solution

Dip a clean white towel or sponge in the cleaning solution and test an inconspicuous place to make sure it doesn’t damage the carpet. Once you are sure of the color-fastness, apply the solution onto the stained area. Dampen the area, making sure not to saturate the carpet.

Step 4

Blot the Stain

With a clean white towel, press down on the carpet to soak up the coffee stain and cleaning solution. Keep blotting until all the excess moisture is removed from your carpet. Use a clean portion of the towel each time you blot. If the stain persists, apply more cleaning solution and gently rub with a scrub brush, then blot. Check out 9 more tips on how to remove coffee stains.
