What Are Backlit Kitchen Countertops?

Backlit kitchen countertops are mildly translucent countertop surfaces with flat LED light panels installed underneath. The right combination of light panels and translucent material (usually stone) creates the illusion of a countertop that glows.

Several companies make LED panels designed for installation beneath countertops, and they all work similarly. All backlit kitchen counters need some sort of substrate installed underneath to support both the counter and lights. Plywood 3/4 inch thick is an excellent choice since it’s thick enough to accommodate shallow grooves for wires to be tucked out of the way. Vertical backsplashes can also be backlit using the same method, as seen below.

What Kind of Countertop Stone Can Be Backlit?

Regardless of your decor preferences, it’s important to choose the right material for the job— one that’s translucent enough to allow lots of light through. Luckily, quite a few types of stone fit the bill: quartz, onyx, agate, marble, certain varieties of granite and others. Some man-made materials like glass and resin also make great backlit kitchen counters.

Can I Do This Project Myself?

It depends on the size of your countertop, your experience level and available tools. At the very least, you’ll need the following tools and materials:

• Counter backlighting panels
• Plywood
• Table saw
• Jigsaw
• Caulking gun
• Silicone
• Drill and drill index
• Basic wiring tools and skills
• Countertop fastening hardware

You’ll need to be comfortable cutting the plywood to size on a table saw, and probably custom-cutting certain areas with a jigsaw.

Place your plywood substrate on top of the cabinets, then arrange your light panels on top. Use a table saw to cut 3/8 inch deep channels in the plywood as needed to route wires from the LED panels, then join the custom-sized plywood substrate to your cabinet using countertop fastening hardware.

Fasten the LED panels down with a little silicone, then route and connect the wires to the nearest handy circuit (if doing your own electrical work is permitted in your area).

For a seasoned DIYer, building your own backlit kitchen counter isn’t difficult. But if it’s your first DIY project, you’d be wise to get some experienced help.

Best for General Use

I like gloves with a latex covering on the palms and fingertips and a breathable fabric on the other side. The latex provides a good grip when weeding or digging, and also keeps my hands dry. You can often buy these gloves in packs of several pairs so you’ll have extra on hand if they get wet and you need a dry pair.

I tend to drive old cars, so the first time I saw the puddle, I assumed the worst — an oil leak and expensive repairs. When I checked, though, it was just water. Then I remembered the air conditioner. All ACs produce water, and your car’s just drips it onto the road.

Window air conditioners, however, feature drainage systems that direct the water outside. A faulty drainage system is usually the culprit when the unit leaks onto the windowsill or the floor.

Most of the time, you can fix drainage problems yourself. Dripping can also result from frozen evaporator coils — usually an easy fix. If you have an older unit, it may be running low on refrigerant, and recharging it might cost as much as a new air conditioner.

What Causes an AC to Leak Water Inside?

An air conditioner circulates warm air past a set of evaporator coils, which cools it. Since cool air holds less moisture than warm air, the excess condenses and turns to water. It’s basically the same process that makes rain.

Some units direct the water through a tube to the outer part of the housing. In others, the blower slings the water against the compressor to cool it. In both cases, the water eventually drips into a pan at the bottom.

If water is dripping from an AC unit indoors, the reason may be one of the following:

• A blocked drainage tube: Dust from the air can mix with water and create an obstruction.
• A damaged drain pan or blocked water outlet: A damaged pan produces drips in all the wrong places, and a blocked water outlet causes an overflow.
• The drain pan tilts the wrong way: It needs to tilt toward the outside. Some window AC units give the pan this tilt when the unit is installed level. Units without this feature must be tilted during installation. If the unit wasn’t leveled properly, it’s probably been leaking since Day One.
• A dirty air filter: This prevents air from circulating freely around the evaporator coils, and the refrigerant can’t absorb the heat. That makes the coils ice over and drip water when the unit isn’t running.
• There’s a refrigerant leak: This can also cause the coils to ice over and drip when the unit is off. It requires professional repair.

What’s the First Thing To Do if an AC Is Leaking Water?

Turn the air conditioner off and wipe any water off the floor. Open the grille on the front and, if necessary, remove the air filter and look for ice on the evaporator coils.

If the coils are iced over, leave the unit off to melt the ice and put a bucket underneath to catch the water. If that’s not the issue, leave the air conditioner off while you troubleshoot. Better yet, unplug it.

How To Fix an AC Leaking Water Inside

Some window air conditioner fixes require access to the outdoor part of the unit. That can be challenging if it’s mounted in an upper-story window, or in a tall building. If you can’t reach it through the window, you might need to bring it inside. If you’re not up for that, call a pro.

Tools and materials

• Kitchen sponge;
• Screwdriver;
• Epoxy putty;
• Torpedo level;
• Shims.

Clean or replace the air filter

If you see ice, cleaning or replacing the air filter may solve the problem. Most filters are cleanable.

If so, run water through it from the faucet while you scrub out the dirt with a sponge. Let the filter dry while the ice on the coils melts, then put it back in and start the unit. If the coils ice over again, call a service tech to recharge the refrigerant.

Clear the drain hole

The drain pan for a window unit has a hole in one of the outside corners, which may be plugged. To access it, pull back or remove the skirting from one side of the unit and reach through the opening. Remove any loose debris and poke a screwdriver through the hole to open it up.

Patch or replace the drain pan

If you have an older AC and you see water dripping from any part of the drain pan, the pan’s probably rusted and you may have to replace it. If there’s just one hole and you can reach it, you can try to patch it with epoxy putty.

Clean the drain tube

The drain tube leading from the evaporator coils to the outside of the housing may be blocked. Check your owner’s manual to find where this is and clean it with a long, thin object like a sewing needle.

You may need to remove the outside housing cover to do this. If the air conditioner is mounted in a high window, open the window far enough to reach the cover or take the unit indoors.

Adjust the tilt

If a newly installed window air conditioner leaks onto the floor, it’s probably not tilted enough toward the outside.

Before you adjust it, check the manual to see if the pan is installed inside the unit at the proper angle. In that case, the air conditioner should be sitting dead-level in the window. Otherwise, it should tilt downward toward the outside.

Use a torpedo level to check it. If the AC needs to tilt outward, shim up the front with thin pieces of wood or plastic until a quarter of the bubble passes the centering line.

But what about hardwood floors?

“Hardwood floors can be a beautiful and durable addition to any space,” says Andrii Gurskyi, founder of the New York City maid service HomeClean. “But they can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses.”

Here, Gurskyi shares his tips for disinfecting hardwood floors, gleaned from years of experience as a cleaning company owner.

Note: These tips are for finished wood floors. Never use any water or liquid cleaner on unsealed wood floors. Sealants protect wood by resisting water intrusion, and unfinished wood floors lack this layer of defense.

What’s the Difference Between Cleaning and Disinfecting Hardwood Floors?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cleaning means physically removing dirt and germs from surfaces. To do that, we scrub them with soap (or a cleaner) and water, then rinse to remove the residue.

For hardwood floors, add one last step: drying the wood surface well. Water left to pool on wood leads to warping and mold growth, particularly if it seeps into the spaces between the boards.

Disinfecting means killing or inactivating germs, not just removing them. Disinfectants feature chemicals like bleach or alcohol that disrupt the bacteria or virus, usually by destroying their cell wall or metabolic processes.

The CDC says to always clean before disinfecting. That way you remove most of the problem organisms and dirt first, so the disinfectant can work on the microorganisms left behind.

Note: There’s also sanitizing and sterilizing.

Sanitizing is the level of microbe removal between cleaning and disinfecting. Sanitizers aren’t as strong as disinfectants, but can be a worthwhile alternative to harsh chemicals if you’re looking to reduce germs. Sterilizing means to eradicate all forms of microscopic life. That’s typically done in specific circumstances, like in healthcare facilities and commercial food canning operations.

Should Hardwood Floors Be Disinfected?

It depends.

Cleaning does a good job of removing dirt and germs, according to hardwood floor experts. But when there’s an illness outbreak, or you want to target areas where kids and pets track in dirt and germs, disinfecting your hardwood floor can be a good idea. Gurskyi says it’s crucial to disinfect properly, though, because harsh chemicals and water can damage wood.

How To Disinfect Hardwood Floors

“Look for disinfectants that are specifically designed for hardwood floors, or those that are labeled safe for use on wood,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid using harsh chemicals that can damage the finish of the floor or leave streaks.”

Read the label carefully, and always test a small area to be sure the disinfectant won’t harm your floor.

Tools and materials for disinfecting hardwood floors

• Wood-safe disinfectant like Lysol Clean & Fresh Multi-Surface Cleaner;
• Bucket;
• Mop with wringing action;
• Microfiber cloth (optional).

Sweep the floor

“Before you begin disinfecting your hardwood floors,” Gurskyi says, “you need to make sure they are free of any dirt or debris.” Use a broom or vacuum to remove any loose dirt, dust and hair. Don’t forget to reach into all the corners and under furniture.

Dilute the disinfectant

“Most disinfectants come in concentrated form,” Gurskyi says, “which means you’ll need to dilute them before use.” Add the product to the bucket and dilute as recommended on the label.

Don’t go overboard. You won’t kill germs any better if you use more than indicated, so follow the instructions to the letter. Using too much could leave a residue on the surface of the wood — or worse, damage the finish.

Apply the disinfectant

Apply the solution to the floor with a mop for a large area, or a microfiber cloth for a small one. Wring out the mop or cloth well between passes to avoid pooling. After you’ve tested a small area, cover the entire surface of the floor with the disinfectant.

Pro tip: Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are safe for wood floors, Gurskyi says. They can be used to quickly disinfect high-traffic areas without doing the entire floor.

Allow to sit, then rinse

Disinfectants need time to work, so it’s important to allow the disinfectant to sit on the floor for the full time recommended on the product label. Then rinse the floor with clean water from a well-wrung mop or cloth.

Dry the floor

Almost done.

“Finally, use a clean, dry cloth or mop to dry the floor,” Gurskyi says. “Avoid leaving any excess moisture on the surface, as this can cause the wood to warp or cup.”

Now that your hardwood floors are clean and disinfected, keep them that way! Sweep your hardwood floors regularly, and remove shoes at the door to avoid tracking in dirt and germs.

Non-grounding-type receptacles are called that because they lack a third prong for grounding electrical equipment, appliances and tools. Grounding is important to protect against electric shocks; the third line redirects electric current during a hazardous ground-fault condition in an appliance.

Attempting to plug three-prong appliance and equipment cords into old two-prong receptacles can be a serious electrical hazard and probably violates the manufacturer’s warranty.

The National Electrical Code (NEC) generally does not apply retroactively, so you’re not obligated to replace non-grounding-type receptacles. However, if you do replace them, the new ones must be grounded to conform to the NEC.

Replacing old receptacles used to be simple. But now, like many things, it’s more complicated. The good news is, there are multiple viable options.

Grounding-Type Receptacle Replacement

Where a grounding means exists in the receptacle box, three-prong grounding-type receptacles must be installed as replacements. The green grounding terminal on the receptacle must be connected to the grounding means. The grounding means might be a grounded metal box, or a bare or green copper equipment grounding wire in the box.

With some basic testing, you should be able to determine if a grounding means exists.

Non-Grounding-Type Receptacle Replacement

Where a grounding means does NOT exist in the receptacle box, you have a few options:

Replace with another non-grounding-type receptacle

• Non-grounding-type receptacles are still manufactured in limited quantities, so you can replace a broken one with a new one. It doesn’t enhance electrical safety, but allows you to make a necessary repair in a pinch.
• Don’t use three-prong adapters with two-prong plugs. If not installed properly, they can be a serious safety hazard.

Replace with a ground-fault circuit-interrupter (GFCI) receptacle

• This significantly improves safety. You won’t have a grounding means for your appliances, but the GFCI provides shock protection by tripping and stopping the flow of electricity during a ground-fault condition.

• If you select this option, the receptacle or cover plate must be labeled “No Equipment Ground.” The labels are included in the package when you buy the GFCI receptacle.

Replace with a grounding-type receptacle

• If you have a branch circuit with a series of daisy-chained receptacles around a room, you can install a GFCI receptacle in the first receptacle box as mentioned above, then install standard grounding-type receptacles in the downstream receptacle boxes. Say you have a branch circuit that supplies four receptacles in one bedroom, then it jumps over to supply four receptacles in another bedroom. You only need one GFCI in the first receptacle box on that circuit in the first bedroom, and seven standard receptacles in the remaining downstream boxes on that circuit.
• The GFCI receptacle must be labeled “No Equipment Ground,” and the other downstream standard grounding-type receptacles or their cover plates must be labeled “GFCI Protected” and “No Equipment Ground.” These labels are provided by the manufacturer when you buy the GFCI receptacle.

Are There Other Code Requirements When Replacing Receptacles?

In recent years, the NEC added new rules for replacement receptacles. These are applicable to any type of existing receptacle you replace, two-prong or three-prong.

Ground-fault circuit-interrupter protection (GFCI)

GFCI technology protects people from lethal shocks. If you replace an existing two-prong or three-prong receptacle at a location that must otherwise have GFCI protection in the current NEC — say, next to your bathroom sink — you need to provide GFCI protection.

Arc-fault circuit-interrupter protection (AFCI)

AFCI technology protects people and property from fire hazards. If you replace an existing two- or three-prong receptacle at a location that must otherwise have AFCI protection in the current NEC, like in a bedroom model, you need to provide AFCI protection. Best to install an AFCI circuit breaker at your main panel.

Tamper-resistant receptacles (TR)

A tamper-resistant receptacle has built-in shutters to prevent young children from inserting foreign objects into the receptacle. When replacing existing receptacle outlets, all replacement receptacles must be tamper-resistant.

Weather-resistant receptacles (WR)

Weather-resistant receptacles feature corrosion-resistant components. When properly installed in a weatherproof enclosure, they provide extra durable protection from rain, snow, ice and moisture.

If you replace an existing receptacle at a location that otherwise requires weather-resistant receptacles in the current NEC, the replacement receptacles must be weather-resistant. So if you replace an old outdoor GFCI receptacle, then the replacement GFCI receptacle needs to be marked WR.

Bagged Mulch

If you don’t want to use leaves or don’t have any around, you can buy bagged mulch. Fornari recommends Coast of Maine Dark Harbor Blend Enriching Mulch for vegetable gardens. Its fine texture doesn’t suffocate young plants, and it decomposes by the end of the summer.

Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, it depends on the size of your family and how much laundry your do, says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company.

There’s a tradeoff for the higher efficiency and energy cost savings — smaller loads and longer wait times. However, for some people, it’s a blessing.

“If you are in an older home or apartment that was not built for a dryer and therefore has no outside vent,” says Shimek, “you can use a ventless dryer instead of installing a vent into the home or apartment.”

Ventless washer dryer combos are so much more efficient than standard vented ones that at least one country — Switzerland — has prohibited vented dryers. In North America, however, we’re not there yet. Here, ventless dryers tend to have small capacities, frustrating busy people with large families.

However, given the need for higher efficiency and the phasing out of gas appliances in some places, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on new products. Manufacturers have begun providing larger units with more capacity and faster drying times.

What Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo?

A ventless washer-dryer combo and a conventional one employ different technologies.

Shimek says a ventless dryer draws in cool air from the room and heats it like a vented dryer. “[But] instead of venting the humid hot air outside,” he says, “it pushes the air through a condenser loop which cools the air back down, pulling the water out of the air and draining into a storage tank.”

There’s no need for a vent because air is constantly recirculated between the tumbler compartment and the condensation chamber.

The dryer uses a refrigeration system similar an air conditioner or dehumidifier. Condensing coils in the tumbler compartment heat up the air so it can absorb moisture. Then evaporative coils in the drain area cool the air as it circulates, forcing the moisture out. The compressor driving the process uses about as much energy as a refrigerator compressor.

The washer, sharing the same compartment as the dryer, works like a conventional washing machine. It requires hot and cold water hookups and a drain shared by the dryer.

You just put in your laundry, select the wash/dry cycle appropriate for that load, and the appliance does the rest. After the washing cycle ends, the dryer starts and continues until the moisture sensor detects the clothes are dry.

A typical washer-dryer combo is a front-loading rectangular box with a capacity from 2.4 to 2.7 cubic feet, but some are larger. The GE Profile Ultrafast Combo — which won an award at the 2023 International Builders’ Show — and the Whirlpool Ventless All In One Washer Dryer both feature 4.8-cubic-foot capacity.

Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Pros and Cons

The decision to go for a ventless washer-dryer combo isn’t a slam dunk. Although there are some obvious advantages, there are also significant drawbacks.

Pros

• Versatility: You can install a ventless washer-dryer combo anywhere with water hookups and a 120-volt GFCI receptacle. It can go in a corner of the kitchen, an alcove in the bathroom or even a closet.
• Energy savings: Combo washer-dryers can be plugged into a standard outlet — no need for a 240-volt circuit. They use as little as 40 percent of the energy of conventional units.
• Convenience: Because the unit washes and dries in a single cycle, you simply load the laundry and take it out when it’s done.
• Easy on clothes: The drier generates far less heat than a conventional one so it’s less likely to damage delicate clothing.
• Safety: There’s no ductwork to collect flammable lint, so a ventless unit less likely to start a fire.

Cons

• Cost: Ventless washer-dryer combos cost more than conventional ones and don’t last as long. The typical lifespan, according to Shimek, is eight to 10 years, versus 10 to 13 years for a conventional combo unit.
• Space: Unless you go for one of the more recent models, you’ll have half the space (or less) for your clothes than with a conventional combo.
• Longer drying times: Some units can take up to an hour longer to dry clothes than conventional dryers. Newer models reduce this to 10 or 15 minutes, but it’s still significant.
• Humidity: Ventless washer-dryer combos can increase the humidity in the surrounding area. Shimek says that can lead to problems with mold and mildew.

Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Right for You?

A ventless washer-dryer combo could be just what you need if any of the following apply to you:

• You live alone or with only one or two other people.
• You live in a small space with no room for a conventional washer-dryer combo.
• You’re renting an apartment or live in a condo without a washer or dryer, and building rules prohibit cutting a hole in the wall for a vent.
• You don’t mind taking extra time to do the laundry.
• Saving energy is your top priority.

The time may come when energy concerns make conventional gas and electric combo units obsolete. But it hasn’t come yet. If you do a lot of laundry, you already have vents in your laundry room and patience isn’t your defining quality, you’re probably better off with a conventional washer-dryer combo unit — for now.

Cut Your Parts

Start by cutting the parts for your coat rack. Refer to the cutting layout diagram above to see how each component fits on the board.

In this diagram, we assume you purchased a 10-foot board at a home center, surfaced on all four sides with exact dimensions of a 1 x 8: 7-1/4-in. wide by 3/4-in. thick. The cutting diagram includes a 1/8-inch buffer around the perimeter of the board, and assumes your blade’s kerf is also 1/8-inch.

The last step: Trim the stile (E) thickness from 3/4-in. to 5/8-inch. If you’d rather do this on a thickness planer than a table saw, keep all the stiles together and plane them down to 5/8-in. before cutting them to 4-1/2-in. lengths.

Can You Afford the Rent?

Your dream apartment won’t seem so dreamy if you struggle to pay the rent each month. Before signing a lease that may be difficult and expensive to get out of, Barone suggests considering your current income-to-expense ratio. “Experts say a good rule of thumb for renters is to set aside about 30% of their income for rent,” he says.

Let’s say you make $60,000 per year. Using the 30% rule means $19,800 — about $1,650 per month — can go toward rent.

The “30% rule” dates back decades, before ballooning student loan debt and other modern expenses, so take a good hard look at your obligations. “You know your priorities and spending best,” Barone says. “You may spend more or less than 30% based on your values.”

Sometimes landlords, management companies and cities have income requirements for renters. To apply for a New York City apartment, Barone says, your yearly salary must be 40 times the monthly rent.

Consumer lawn mowers are generally classified by design (i.e. whether you ride it or push it) or by feature, like whether it’s powered by gas or a battery. Zero-turn radius (ZTR) is a distinctive feature that allows for precision cutting.

There are a limited number of zero-turn push mowers; zero-turn technology is much more common in riding lawn mowers. While not all riding mowers are zero-turn, most consumer zero-turn models are riding mowers. (If you’re curious about zero-turn push mowers, here’s one with a single swiveling front wheel and one with no wheels at all.)

To provide a good side-by-side comparison of a riding vs. a zero-turn lawn mower, we’ll refer to two models from John Deere: the traditional S100 and the zero-turn Z330M. Although the specs on mowers vary by manufacturer, these models serve as good stand-ins for our purposes.

What Are the Differences Between a Traditional Riding Mower and a Zero-Turn Riding Mower?

There are two main differences: turn radius and steering controls.

Turn radius

This is the defining characteristic of zero-turn mowers. A traditional riding mower turns the same way as a rear-wheel drive car. The rear wheels propel it forward while the front wheels control the direction it moves, resulting in a curved arc.

But a ZTR mower can rotate its drive wheels in opposite directions simultaneously. That gives it the ability to turn without moving forward.

Steering mechanism

Most zero-turn riding mowers feature lap bars rather than a steering wheel. Each bar controls a single rear tire. Push both bars forward and you’ll go forward. Pull them both back and you’ll go in reverse. Push one forward while pulling the other back, and you’ll rotate in place.

It’s worth noting not all zero-turn mowers use lap bars. Some zero-turn riding mowers come with a standard steering wheel but still offer pinpoint turning.

Traditional Riding Mower Advantages

We discovered this hack on TikTok that shows what may be the simplest, most cost-effective method of creating a 3-dimensional accent wall around—the paper plate accent wall. All you need is a tape measure, pencil, level, a pair of scissors, a package or two of white paper plates and a hot glue gun with some glue sticks at the ready. Do it right, and the texture and pattern created by the repurposed paper plates are quite elegant and striking. Here’s how to do it.

• Decide how much of your wall you want to accent, and how close to the floor you’d like the paper plate pattern to begin. Use your level, tape measure and pencil to mark a very light level line at this height (you can also begin the plates right at floor level).
• Squeeze a little hot melt glue onto the rim of each plate, then stick them to your wall one at a time, using your level line (or floor) as a guide.
• Fasten another plate right next to the first. Continue working your way across the wall, then add more rows, each directly above the previous one.
• Once you’ve covered your accent wall with a single layer of plates, add a second layer on top. Arrange each row of the second layer to evenly cover the seams between plates in the first layer, giving the wall an elegant, patterned appearance.

If you’d prefer not to mount plates directly to your wall with hot melt glue, try this version of the hack instead. It involves creating a mounting surface for the plates with sheets of white Bristol board taped together. Use as many sheets as you like to create the ideal-sized accent wall for your space, then mount the plate-clad backing to your wall with double-sided tape or sticky tack. You’ll still be using something sticky on your wall, but not nearly as much as with the direct plate-to-wall method.

Whatever the reason, draining a pool is seldom as simple as pulling a plug, but it is something you can do yourself. Here’s how.

Tools and Materials to Drain an Above-Ground Pool

Depending on the method (see below), here’s a short list of tools and materials you may need to drain an above-ground pool.

• Long garden hose: It needs to reach from the pool to whatever drainage point you’ve selected.
• Swimming pool cover pump: The same type of submersible pump that keeps water from collecting on a pool cover can also be used for draining. A submersible sump pump will work, too.
• Hose drain adapter: If your pool has a built-in drain valve, you’ll need a hose adapter to attach to it.
• Utility bucket: A standard bucket with a comfortable handle will come in handy for draining the last few inches of water. Make sure it’s not so big that it’s difficult to lift when filled. Remember, water weighs more than eight pounds per gallon.
• Shop vacuum: If you don’t want to scoop buckets of water, use a wet/dry shop vacuum to remove remaining water from the bottom of the pool.
• Swimsuit and sunscreen: It is a pool, after all.

How to Drain an Above-Ground Pool

Think it through

Before you pull the plug, plan out your steps. Here’s what to consider:

• In most climates, winterizing a pool requires a partial draining at most.
• If you’re doing a partial drain, remember that removing more than one-quarter of the water can cause the sides of the pool to collapse.
• For a complete pool draining for disassembly, plan to drain and take down the pool on the same weekend. Leaving an above-ground pool standing empty can damage it quickly.
• Before you let the water run into your garden, your main clean-out drain or a municipal drain, check with local authorities to make sure it’s permissible. Chlorinated and salt water can damage your lawn, the larger environment and the water supply. If draining is not allowed, call a pool professional.

Draining the pool

There are three ways to drain an above-ground pool:

With a pool cover pump: With a garden hose attached, set a submersible pool cover pump in the middle of the pool floor. Set the other end of the hose wherever you want water to drain. Then turn on the pump and begin draining. Don’t walk away — you need to ensure the pump is working correctly and water drains as it should. Once you get down to the last few inches, remove the pump and drain the rest with a bucket or shop vacuum. You can also do it as you’re disassembling the pool.

With a garden hose siphon: This is the original DIY drainage method! Submerge a long garden hose in the pool, making sure both ends are underwater. Keep pushing down sections of the hose until all the air bubbles come out and the hose fills with water. (You may have to get into the pool to do this.)

Place your finger or hand over one end of the hose and take it out of the pool. Don’t release it until you’re at a spot lower than the waterline. When you’ve reached that point, water should start draining. Once you get down to a few inches of water, drain the rest with a bucket or shop vacuum, or during pool disassembly.

Another option: Attach one end the hose to the water spigot and put the other end in the pool. Turn on the water and let the hose fill up. Then detach the hose from the spigot. The water should start draining.

With a garden hose and pool drain: If your pool has a built-in drain, your job is fairly easy. The pool probably came with a drain adapter to attach to a hose. If not, buy one from a pool supply store. Attach the adapter to the hose, open the drain cover on the outside of the pool (there may be a cover inside the pool as well, which you’ll have to open), insert the adapter and watch the water drain. Depending on the size of your pool, you may need a bucket or shop vac to drain the remaining few inches.

After the pool is drained

Dismantle the pool as soon as possible after the water is out.

• Detach any hoses and pumps.
• Clean the interior and exterior of the pool. For small pools, a spray cleaner is fine. For larger pools, use a mild soapy solution and a mop.
• Make sure the pool is dry.
• Disassemble and fold, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Know the Difference between a “Classic Car” and an “Old Car”

Classic cars often need so much attention, you can end up spending more time maintaining it than actually driving it. First-time buyers will generally be better off buying a car that needs little or no work, since buying a vehicle for restoration requires a great deal of expertise-and a much higher budget.

Some so-called classics are simply old cars, particularly if they are not rare models yet still need a lot of money spending on them. Always make sure you go for something that isn’t going to plummet in value as soon as you pull it out of the shop.

But are you stuck? Do you have to take what comes, or can you negotiate?

“When it comes to negotiating rent, every landlord and property is different,” says Ryan Barone, co-founder and CEO of RentRedi property management software. Stacy Brown, director of training at Real Property Management, a Neighborly company, agrees. “It really depends on the relationship between the tenant and the property owner,” she says.

Below, Brown and Barone explain the best way to approach your landlord regarding this dicey issue.

Can You Negotiate Rent?

Yes, but Brown says you might have more luck with private parties vs. property management companies. Barone says independently-owned properties are typically managed by the people who own them, while apartment complexes may be owned by larger corporations.

If you’re a current tenant, it’s important to start talking before the lease term starts, Barone says. “This way, the landlord can appropriately budget for the property expenses if they decide on different rent terms with you,” he says. You have a better shot if you’re a good tenant who pays the rent on time.

What if you’re looking for a new place? Can you negotiate rent before signing the initial lease? “Actually, yes, a new prospective renter can negotiate,” Brown says.

Most rental property is managed by licensed real estate agents, Brown says, and they have a fiduciary duty to present all offers to the owner. If you’re looking to rent from an individual property owner, absolutely give negotiating a try. All they can do is say no.

To hammer home this point, Brown quotes Wayne Gretzky: “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

How To Negotiate Rent

Negotiating is a delicate process, Brown says, so do your homework and have a plan. You’ll need to convince the landlord a rent decrease will be worth their while. Depending on your landlord’s circumstances, they might accommodate a unique arrangement for you, Barone says.

“This setup could mean discounted rent in exchange for maintenance duties like sweeping the walkways, cleaning the pool or mowing the lawn,” he says. “This could be especially helpful to landlords with multiple properties, if a renter is willing to help with these chores at all of their units.”

If you’re ready to negotiate, remember these tips:

• Know the market rate for the property type and area. Use Zillow or other rental search engines to make comparisons.
• Be ready to prove you’re a reliable renter who pays bills on time and takes care of the unit.
• Look for amenities or features that could improve the property, or be updated with a little work.
• Offer your services to the landlord in exchange for a rent decrease.
• Be realistic. Most landlords have high property expenses to maintain, so don’t expect a discount that’s below market value.

How To Negotiate Rent Increases

Property owners have cost increases every year too and may raise your rent for the next lease term. If the increase will put a strain on your budget, look for ways you can help offset those costs. If you’re not the handy type, or you’re living in an apartment with fewer DIY opportunities, maybe you can get a perk to offset the increase.

“If your landlord is unable to lower your rent, there are other things you might be able to ask about,” Barone says. “For example, if you’re a longstanding tenant who is trusted by your landlord, they might be willing to offer you a parking space at no cost, or forgo your pet’s monthly rent.”

It can’t hurt to ask. Do your homework, and be prepared to advocate for yourself as a valuable tenant with a good rental history.

That said, everything fails eventually. Usually, broken vehicle parts mean a simple trip to your mechanic shop to fix whatever went wrong and the hope that your car insurance will help cover costs. But occasionally one of these small parts proves to be faulty by design.

Sometimes these design failures are dangerous. That’s when responsible vehicle manufacturers issue a recall of vehicles affected by the faulty part and take steps to redesign or repair it. That’s exactly what Hyundai has done recently with their recall of thousands of sedans and SUVs.

Why Are These Hyundai Models Recalled

These vehicles are being recalled because of a possibly dangerous problem with their seatbelt pre-tensioners. Seatbelt pre-tensioners use a small explosive charge to tighten and lock seatbelts around the driver and passengers during a crash. Hyundai has determined that the seatbelt pre-tensioners in the models above could explode during a crash, potentially harming the vehicle’s occupants. Hyundai has recalled other vehicles over the last several years because of faulty pre-tensioners and is likely trying to correct this issue in more vehicles before anyone is injured.

How Do I Check for Recalls on My Vehicle?

Think your vehicle may be included in this recall? Visit the recalls section of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website and enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). If your vehicle has been recalled, the NHTSA website will let you know.

Alternatively, you can enter your VIN in the recalls section on Hyundai’s website. Hyundai has also stated that it’ll be notifying all owners of affected vehicles on or before April 17, 2023.

What Are Heirloom Seeds?

Depending on who you ask, the definition varies, but most gardeners agree the following characteristics:

• Open-pollinated: That means they’re naturally pollinated from plants of the same variety. or they self-pollinate. So when you save the seeds, you’ll get the same variety when you grow them the following season.
• Grown for at least 50 years: There’s some wiggle room here. Some count varieties as heirlooms if they’ve been grown for 40 years. Others insist they must have appeared before the 1940s. Suffice it to say, many generations of gardeners have grown heirloom varieties.

Types of Heirloom Seeds

They break down like this:

Wax Myrtle

Also known as southern bayberry because of its glossy olive-green leaves, wax myrtle is a multi-trunk evergreen with whitish-gray bark and leaves that are fragrant when crushed. It reaches 15 to 20 feet tall and wide but can be easily sheared into a hedge.

When male and female plants grow close together, female wax myrtle develops pretty pale-blue berries that birds love. Plants grow up to five feet a year and make great screens. This heat-loving shrub grows best in moist, acidic soil but is adaptable once established. It grows in part to full sun in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 7 through 11.

But ripping out wood paneling isn’t the only option for that dark heavy wall covering. Wood paneling can be painted. It’s a less messy, less costly option than removing it and dealing with whatever material you find underneath.

Yet nothing’s that simple, right? To erase the dated look of paneling, you’ll need to deal with the telltale grooves that give away what’s lurking underneath. We called on an expert to help.

How To Cover the Grooves in Paneling

We asked Jeff Shipwash, who fixes and flips houses through his Knoxville, Tennessee-based business, Shipwash Properties, how his team deals with wood paneling during renovations.

“We actually encounter many homes that still boast wood paneling within,” says Shipwash. “In the past, we would rip it out, or modify it to make it appear more modern.” But if you want to keep the paneling and make it appear more like drywall, he says, “Prep work is critical in order to make sure you get a great finish.”

Step 1: Fill the grooves with joint compound

Shipwash says his team usually starts by filling in the groves with a quality joint compound, aka drywall mud or joint mud. He recommends USG joint compound. You’ll also need a putty knife.

“This step is only necessary if you desire the finished product to look more like [drywall] and less like paneling,” Shipwash says. “In my opinion, you need to fill in the grooves with at least two coats of drywall mud.” Also, sand between coats.

If you hire a contractor for the job, Shipwash says the cost will vary by the project size. “The average we spend per day on a drywall crew is around $1,000,” he says. “This is for a crew of two or three experienced contractors. I have seen a few solo contractors that bill around $400 to $500 per day.”

Step 2: Sand the entire wall

Once your two coats are complete, sand down the entire wall with fine grit sandpaper, ideally in the 180- to 220-grit range.

“This will do two things,” says Shipwash. “First, it will level the joint mud level with the rest of the wall. Second, it will scuff the paneling to allow paint and primer to better adhere and avoid chipping.”

After sanding, clean the walls with a damp sponge or rag.

Step 3: Add primer and paint

Next, apply a high-quality bonding primer. An oil-based primer works best. But if you don’t want to deal with the odor and the clean-up, opt for a stain-blocking latex primer instead.

Two coats of primer is ideal. You might get by with one coat if you’re painting with a darker color. Once the walls are primed to your satisfaction, Shipwash says, “you’re ready to paint the paneling to any color you desire.”

Note that in this article on painting wood paneling, our pro recommends an oil-based primer and paint, applied with a paint sprayer for the smoothest finish. That method calls for a lot of ventilation, equipment and clean-up. Water-based paints and primers will work, but applying them with a brush or roller won’t achieve the seamless look of a paint sprayer.

Is it Time to Rethink That Paneling?

Filling in paneling grooves with joint compound may be doable, but it’s labor-intensive for a DIYer.

“If you’re hiring a contractor to give your walls more of a [drywall] look, I honestly recommend just having them replace the paneling entirely,” Shipwash says. “This will result in about the same amount of labor time and the finished product will be better.”

Plus, maybe you shouldn’t be so quick to get rid of those grooves. “As a flipper,” says Shipwash, “I have noticed the trend of paneling to be coming back in style.” He says that many homeowners like to leave a wall of paneling as an accent to complement the surrounding, non-paneled walls.

“If you enjoy the look of the paneling but hate the color, skip the mudding step and go straight to cleaning, priming and painting.” he says. Or just clean the wood paneling and usher in a retro trend!

With more organic weed killers hitting the market every growing season, I chatted with an expert about what they are and how they work.

Meet The Expert

Heather Johnson is the lead horticulturist at Bachman’s Floral and Garden in Minneapolis, Minn., where she specializes in diagnosing and managing plant diseases in everything from turf to pine trees.

She discovered her love of gardening at a young age, which led her to a degree in plant biology from the University of Minnesota and a master’s in plant pathology from the University of California-Davis. Johnson says even in her spare time, she’s consumed by plants. “I currently have over 100 houseplants and spend a little time every day tending to them,” she says.

Choosing The Right Herbicide

Whatever the time of year or the conditions,  you can treat unwanted weeds or grass in environmentally friendly ways — from preemergent to post-emergent, selective and nonselective varieties. But read labels and choose products with care.

“A lot of the organic options are burn-down herbicides, meaning the roots will remain intact and be able to regrow new shoots later,” Johnson says. “[And] salt and vinegar can remain in the soil after killing the intended weeds, which can affect the growth of wanted plants in the area later on.”

To choose what’s best for your lawn or garden, Johnson suggests you start by answering these questions:

What Type of Weeds Are You Trying To Remove?

Common weeds Johnson say most homeowners struggle to control are dandelions, creeping Charlie and crabgrass. The first two are broadleaf weeds. “If your lawn is overrun with these, it’s more likely that the health of the lawn is being impacted, and lawn care besides just weed removal needs to be done,” Johnson said.

The crabgrass problem is so widespread that companies have developed entire lines of herbicides to eliminate it. Though toxic, these can be effective when used correctly. However, Johnson says, “same as with other weeds, if your lawn is overrun with crabgrass, then there are other health issues that need to be addressed.”

How Many Weeds Are You Targeting?

In cases where weeds haven’t overtaken the lawn or appeared in large clusters, Johnson prefers hand weeding with a tool. “It allows me to dig up the entire weed without the potential of damaging the lawn,” she says.

On the other hand, if the whole lawn is overrun with weeds, she suggests “reseeding along with testing the soil to understand the health of the grass and what nutrients may be needed to amend it.”

When Are You Applying the Weed Killer?

“Some weeds are best handled preemergence, and some weeds are best handled post-emergence,” says Johnson. “Crabgrass can be handled pre- or post-emergence, with the most effective time being preemergence, in April or May, to avoid harming the lawn.”

Broadleaf weeds are best ­handled post-emergence, she says, “as long as it’s before they flower and spread.”

Make Your Own All Natural Weed Killer

A mixture of vinegar, salt and dish soap can be an effective spot treatment for weeds, according to Johnson. Concentrated vinegar works because it’s stronger than the household variety, usually at near 20% acetic acid.

The salt and acetic acid present in vinegar cause unwanted plants to dehydrate, wither and die. And the dish soap enhances the effectiveness by breaking down the plant’s outer layer (cuticle).

Mix one gallon of vinegar, one ounce of dish soap and one cup of salt in a plastic bottle and spray directly on weeds. Apply the mixture on a sunny day with no wind. Because vinegar-based products are nonselective weed killers, they will harm nearby plants if you don’t spray carefully. “If used in small amounts, this shouldn’t affect the soil long term,” Johnson said.

Eliminating Weeds Without Weed Killers

If you’re still feeling uneasy about using any weed killer, environmentally friendly or not, other means are available to do the job.

Try pouring boiling water on sidewalk, driveway or patio weeds. The water scalds the unwanted weed, and any runoff will cool on the impervious surface before it reaches other plants.

To eradicate weeds from nonflammable areas like cracks in sidewalks and gravel driveways, a propane torch is another effective alternative. Weeds growing on dry or combustible materials should never be torched. Nor should poison ivy or other poisonous plants because their smoke can cause serious allergic reactions.

For large areas of your yard, or between rows of vegetables in your planter boxes, consider solarizing or smothering the soil.

To solarize, place a transparent plastic tarp over the soil. The tarp prevents water absorption while heating the soil and ultimately killing all vegetation. To smother, place layers of newspaper or old shower curtains on the soil to block the sun and moisture.

One of the most effective ways to maintain a weed-free lawn is by following a lawn care schedule. Johnson recommends keeping a lawn calendar that outlines when to do each maintenance task, like mowing, fertilizing and thatching.

“Following those tips and hand-removing weeds when they are present is a good way to mitigate weeds without the use of any chemicals,” she says. If your lawn is more than 50% weeds, Johnson said it’s best to reseed the whole lawn.
