But in Europe, people just call them “dryers.” They’ve been popular there since the late 1990s because they’re compact and require less energy than the “hotboxes” North Americans prefer. Combine a ventless dryer with a washing machine, and you have an energy-saving combo that fits in a closet.

Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, it depends on the size of your family and how much laundry your do, says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company.

There’s a tradeoff for the higher efficiency and energy cost savings — smaller loads and longer wait times. However, for some people, it’s a blessing.

“If you are in an older home or apartment that was not built for a dryer and therefore has no outside vent,” says Shimek, “you can use a ventless dryer instead of installing a vent into the home or apartment.”

Ventless washer dryer combos are so much more efficient than standard vented ones that at least one country — Switzerland — has prohibited vented dryers. In North America, however, we’re not there yet. Here, ventless dryers tend to have small capacities, frustrating busy people with large families.

However, given the need for higher efficiency and the phasing out of gas appliances in some places, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on new products. Manufacturers have begun providing larger units with more capacity and faster drying times.

What Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo?

A ventless washer-dryer combo and a conventional one employ different technologies.

Shimek says a ventless dryer draws in cool air from the room and heats it like a vented dryer. “[But] instead of venting the humid hot air outside,” he says, “it pushes the air through a condenser loop which cools the air back down, pulling the water out of the air and draining into a storage tank.”

There’s no need for a vent because air is constantly recirculated between the tumbler compartment and the condensation chamber.

The dryer uses a refrigeration system similar an air conditioner or dehumidifier. Condensing coils in the tumbler compartment heat up the air so it can absorb moisture. Then evaporative coils in the drain area cool the air as it circulates, forcing the moisture out. The compressor driving the process uses about as much energy as a refrigerator compressor.

The washer, sharing the same compartment as the dryer, works like a conventional washing machine. It requires hot and cold water hookups and a drain shared by the dryer.

You just put in your laundry, select the wash/dry cycle appropriate for that load, and the appliance does the rest. After the washing cycle ends, the dryer starts and continues until the moisture sensor detects the clothes are dry.

A typical washer-dryer combo is a front-loading rectangular box with a capacity from 2.4 to 2.7 cubic feet, but some are larger. The GE Profile Ultrafast Combowhich won an award at the 2023 International Builders’ Show — and the Whirlpool Ventless All In One Washer Dryer both feature 4.8-cubic-foot capacity.

Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Pros and Cons

The decision to go for a ventless washer-dryer combo isn’t a slam dunk. Although there are some obvious advantages, there are also significant drawbacks.

Pros

 • Versatility: You can install a ventless washer-dryer combo anywhere with water hookups and a 120-volt GFCI receptacle. It can go in a corner of the kitchen, an alcove in the bathroom or even a closet.
 • Energy savings: Combo washer-dryers can be plugged into a standard outlet — no need for a 240-volt circuit. They use as little as 40 percent of the energy of conventional units.
 • Convenience: Because the unit washes and dries in a single cycle, you simply load the laundry and take it out when it’s done.
 • Easy on clothes: The drier generates far less heat than a conventional one so it’s less likely to damage delicate clothing.
 • Safety: There’s no ductwork to collect flammable lint, so a ventless unit less likely to start a fire.

Cons

 • Cost: Ventless washer-dryer combos cost more than conventional ones and don’t last as long. The typical lifespan, according to Shimek, is eight to 10 years, versus 10 to 13 years for a conventional combo unit.
 • Space: Unless you go for one of the more recent models, you’ll have half the space (or less) for your clothes than with a conventional combo.
 • Longer drying times: Some units can take up to an hour longer to dry clothes than conventional dryers. Newer models reduce this to 10 or 15 minutes, but it’s still significant.
 • Humidity: Ventless washer-dryer combos can increase the humidity in the surrounding area. Shimek says that can lead to problems with mold and mildew.

Is a Ventless Washer-Dryer Combo Right for You?

A ventless washer-dryer combo could be just what you need if any of the following apply to you:

 • You live alone or with only one or two other people.
 • You live in a small space with no room for a conventional washer-dryer combo.
 • You’re renting an apartment or live in a condo without a washer or dryer, and building rules prohibit cutting a hole in the wall for a vent.
 • You don’t mind taking extra time to do the laundry.
 • Saving energy is your top priority.

The time may come when energy concerns make conventional gas and electric combo units obsolete. But it hasn’t come yet. If you do a lot of laundry, you already have vents in your laundry room and patience isn’t your defining quality, you’re probably better off with a conventional washer-dryer combo unit — for now.

Learn the Anatomy of a Central Home Air Conditioner

Central home air conditioner service systems consist of two major components: a condenser that sits outside your house and the evaporator coil (often referred to as an A-coil) that sits in the plenum of your furnace or air handler. The refrigerant in the A-coil picks up the heat from your home and moves it to the outdoor condensing unit. The condensing unit fan blows outside air through the condensing coil to remove the heat. The condensing unit houses the three parts replaceable by a DIYer: the AC contactor, the start/run capacitor(s) and the condenser fan motor. The condensing unit also houses the compressor, but only a pro can replace that. The A-coil has no parts that can be serviced by a DIYer.

Overloading the Washing Machine With Heavy Items

This is one of the most common and expensive appliance mistakes. It often results in a worn out rear bearing or a broken spider bracket. When that happens, you’ll need a new washer. It’s a $700 to $1,500 mistake.

To prevent it:

 • Avoid washing bathroom mats. They absorb too much water, and the weight stresses the motor.
 • Avoid washing weighted blankets. They destroy your washer faster than any other item.
 • Avoid washing rugs, dog blankets, sleeping bags, comforters and all other bulky items. Like mats and weighted blankets, they’re heavy when wet and will quickly cause trouble.

How to Clean a Microwave With Everyday Household Items https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-a-microwave/ Thu, 16 Feb 2023 16:27:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=515585 Learn how to clean a microwave in less than 10 minutes. It’s easy, we promise!

]]>
“Hooray! It’s time to clean the microwave,” said no one … ever.

Even if you’re the King or Queen of Clean, scrubbing out a microwave ranks up there with trying on bathing suits, deep-cleaning the oven and sifting through the garbage for your child’s discarded retainer. (Read: Not fun at all.) From last week’s scorched-on spaghetti sauce to massive chili explosions, microwave remnants are not for the weak-hearted.

But messy outcomes shouldn’t keep you from nuking your dinner. Here’s how to clean a microwave with minimal effort.

How to Clean a Microwave

Cleaning a microwave requires minimal supplies. It really only takes a few household items like lemon, baking soda and a dishcloth to get it looking (and smelling) up to par.

Tools and supplies

 • Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner: This is the secret to cleaning a microwave with minimal scrubbing. Pour a dash of water and vinegar in the device, heat it in the microwave and watch as steam releases from Angry Mama’s head. It instantly clears up crusty messes, though it’s smart to give the microwave a proper wipe down afterwards.
 • Swedish DishclothsSkip the paper towels and opt for these sustainable products. Simply wet one with water and get to wiping!
 • Miracle Wipes: Finish off your microwave cleaning with Miracle Wipes. They remove interior and exterior grime from appliances while leaving a streak-free shine.
 • Pantry ingredients: Depending on your microwave cleaning method of choice, make sure you have vinegar, baking soda and a lemon on hand.

How to Clean a Microwave With Vinegar

Step 1: Pour in a dash of water and vinegar to the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner’s fill line. Or pour one cup of vinegar and one cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl.

Step 2: Microwave the Angry Mama on high for two minutes. If using the bowl method, heat the solution in your microwave for six to eight minutes. Then let it sit for an additional two minutes.

Step 3: Remove the Angry Mama Microwave Cleaner or bowl carefully with oven mitts. Dip a rag or microfiber towel into the solution and gently wipe the inside and outside of your microwave. For stubborn residue, use a dish sponge. Voilá! You’re done!

How to Clean a Microwave With Baking Soda

Step 1: Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of baking soda and two cups of water.

Step 2: Heat the bowl in the microwave on high for five minutes, then carefully remove the bowl with oven mitts.

Step 3: Dip a sponge into the solution to wipe the microwave inside and out. For stubborn stains, use the solution as a paste and rub each stain with a sponge until the microwave is clean.

How to Clean a Microwave With Lemon

a small bowl of water and lemon In a microwave for cleaning

Step 1: Pour one cup of water into a microwave-safe bowl. Slice a lemon in half and squeeze its juice into the bowl. Then drop both lemon halves into the bowl.

Step 2: Heat the solution in the microwave on high for five minutes or until it boils. Then allow it to sit in the microwave for an additional five minutes. This lets the acidity and steam to loosen dried-on food stains.

Step 3: Remove the bowl with oven mitts and wipe the microwave clean with the solution. For any lingering stains, soak a sponge in the solution and rub until the stains dissipate. Your microwave will be good as new and have a clean lemony scent.

How to Remove a Burnt Smell From a Microwave

Knowing how to remove this is ultra-important. If the stench persists after following the cleaning instructions above, try this:

Step 1: Place a deodorizer inside your microwave, like an open box of baking soda or one cup of dried coffee grounds in an uncovered bowl. Leave it inside overnight (eight to 12 hours) to absorb the odor.

Step 2: Remove the deodorizer from the microwave and discard. Apply vanilla extract, lemon juice or your favorite essential oil to a damp rag and wipe the microwave inside and out.

If it still stinks, the smell is likely trapped in the filters. Refer to your owner’s manual for instructions on how to replace or clean the filters.

FAQs

How Do You Clean Gunk Out of the Microwave?

If food residue lingers, heat one cup of water mixed with two tablespoons of baking soda in the microwave for five minutes. This makes it easier to wipe the remains away while deodorizing the microwave. Mix lemon juice with the baking soda and water solution to leave it smelling extra fresh.

How Do You Clean a Microwave With White Vinegar?

Follow the same steps as above and replace the baking soda with one cup of white vinegar.

How Often to Clean a Microwave

Routinely cleaning your microwave prevents food from hardening and drying to the interior surface and flavoring your food with old residue.

It’s smart to give your microwave a quick clean once a week by wiping it out with a damp rag (though you should wipe down big messes immediately). Do a deep clean once a month following the steps above to prevent stains from settling in.

Collage Of Tiktok Showing How To Clean Microwave Filter

Between central air conditioners, dishwashers, vacuums and furnaces, there always seems to be a household filter that needs your attention. Well, we’ve got another one to add to the list: your microwave charcoal filter. If you’re wondering what exactly it is, chances are you probably need to replace it.

Here’s the lowdown on this hardworking microwave part.

What Is a Microwave Charcoal Filter?

Microwave charcoal filters are found in over-the-range microwaves that aren’t vented to the outside. The filter absorbs unwanted odors while you’re cooking.

Most over-the-range models actually have two filters: a charcoal one and a grease one. The charcoal filter is usually near the top of the appliance behind a vent grill; consult your owner’s manual to confirm the location. The grease filter is underneath the microwave, facing the stovetop.

Here’s how TikTok user @casey_jjones discovered her charcoal filter:

@casey_jo_nc Well found another filter to replace! 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️ #charcoalfilter #microwave #thingstiktoktaughtme #cleaning #whoknew ♬ Harry Potter – The Intermezzo Orchestra

How Often Should You Replace a Microwave Charcoal Filter?

About every six months. You can tell if a filter needs replacing just by looking at it. Here are a few warning signs:

 • The filter appears to be filled with cooking grease.
 • When cooking, you smell odors different from the food you’re preparing. This suggests a buildup of heavy grease from previous meals.
 • If the surface of the filter appears shiny, there’s a lot of grease present. Normally, the filter should look dull and porous.

Check your microwave manual for directions on how to replace the charcoal filter and what size to purchase. Most microwaves require you to unplug the appliance or turn off power at the breaker. Then remove the vent grill; this might be simply pushing a button or removing a couple of screws. Take out the old filter and put in a new one. Done!

Can I Clean My Microwave Filter?

Simple answer: no. You cannot clean a charcoal filter; it must be replaced.

Luckily, they are inexpensive. But while you’re replacing the filter, take the opportunity to clean the rest of your microwave.

Be sure to clean the vent grill and the charcoal filter compartment because both can get gross and sticky. Wash the vent grill in the sink with warm soapy water, and wipe out the compartment thoroughly with a damp cloth.

What To Know About Heat Pump Clothes Dryers https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/heat-pump-dryer/ Thu, 09 Feb 2023 16:23:50 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513234 Heat pump technology makes air conditioners and refrigerators work, so it isn’t new. But some of its applications are.

Residential heat pumps, which may replace gas and resistive heat furnaces over the next 10 years or so, have been around only since the 1990s. Heat pump water heaters are a more recent development. They account for about 1% of water heater sales in 2022, a number that will probably grow.

Heat pump clothes dryers are also new, at least to North America. Developed in Europe in the 1990s and widely used there since 2007, they were introduced to the American market in 2014. As of 2022, they claimed 2% of the market share for dryers.

Also known as ventless dryers, heat pump dryers have a number of advantages over traditional vented dryers, the lack of a vent being one of the most obvious. They do have drawbacks that could stand in the way of their popularity; we’ll get to those in a minute. But one powerful force pushes in the opposite direction — government policy.

States like California want to reduce reliance on fossil fuels for residential use, and the federal government actively promotes heat pump technology as an energy-efficient alternative. Vented dryers have been illegal in Switzerland since 2012. Similar bans could be on the horizon elsewhere, including North America.

What Is a Heat Pump Clothes Dryer?

One that dries clothes without an exhaust vent to the outside.

It features a tumbler like a conventional dryer. But instead of blowing hot air over the clothes and dispersing that air outside through a duct system, a heat pump dryer recycles the air. It warms it in the tumbler, then condenses the moisture into water via evaporative cooling. That water then drains through a tube. For this reason, it’s also known as a condensing dryer.

Besides the tumbler, the main working parts are a compressor (much like the one in an air conditioner or refrigerator) and coils, where a refrigerant cycles between liquid and gaseous states. Because they don’t need ventilation, heat pump dryers can be placed anywhere in a house or apartment. Many are stackable.

How Does a Heat Pump Dryer Work?

The refrigeration system in a heat pump dryer works like a dehumidifier. It’s driven by a compressor, which pressurizes a refrigerant in one set of coils to release heat. The pressurized refrigerant sprays through an expansion valve into another set of coils, where it turns into a gas. Because evaporation absorbs heat, the coils are always cold.

Air that enters the dryer through the intake port warms as it circulates past the condenser coils. Because it’s warm, it can absorb moisture from the tumbler. It then goes out of the tumbler and passes the evaporator coils, where it cools.

Cold air holds less moisture than warm air, and the excess moisture precipitates out and drips into a pan that can be emptied manually or connected to a drainage tube. The cooled air circulates back over the condenser coils and starts the cycle over again.

Benefits of a Heat Pump Dryer

Heat pumps dryers have many advantages over conventional ones:

 • Less expensive to operate: Energy Star reports heat pump dryers are 28% more efficient than conventional dryers.
 • Ventless: There’s no need to punch a hole in the wall for a vent. This eliminates the danger of lint buildup in the vents, which can cause fires. It also means you can put a heat pump dryer almost anywhere. That’s important in apartments where venting isn’t possible.
 • Safer for clothes: A heat pump dryer operates at a lower temperature than a conventional one, so it’s easier on your clothes.
 • Eco-friendly: Because they use less energy than conventional dryers, heat pump dryers are better for the environment.

Drawbacks of a Heat Pump Dryer

The list of drawbacks is slightly longer than the list of benefits:

 • Smaller capacity: Although manufacturers are working to change this, heat pump dryers tend to be smaller than conventional ones. Drum capacities of four cubic feet are typical, compared to seven cubic feet for conventional dryers.
 • Longer drying time: A heat pump dryer takes from 15 to 30 minutes longer to dry a load.
 • Needs more maintenance: All that lint has to go somewhere. Most of it is captured by filters that need cleaning. But some collects on the condenser and evaporator coils, which also need to be cleaned periodically.
 • Can get moldy: Water is constantly generated while the dryer is running. If any drips on the floor under the dryer, mold can become a problem.
 • More expensive: Perhaps the biggest drawback is the price, about twice that of a conventional dryer.

How to Clean an Air Fryer https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-an-air-fryer/ Tue, 31 Jan 2023 16:12:00 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=510012 We know frying isn’t healthy — at least, it wasn’t until we discovered the air fryer. It uses less oil, so food that’s air-fried is lower in fat and calories. Plus, cleaning an air fryer is much easier than cleaning a deep fryer.

To help you care for your new favorite kitchen appliance, we’ve put together a quick guide on how to clean an air fryer.

Are Air Fryers Hard to Clean?

We get it, cleaning kitchen appliances is intimidating. Luckily, an air fryer is easier to spruce up than other cooking gadgets, like an oven. All it takes is warm soapy water and a dish cloth to remove food buildup.

The most time consuming part? Allowing the basket to soak if there’s lots of sticky residue. Check out the handy tools recommended below to ease the process.

How to Clean an Air Fryer

Tools and supplies

 • Dawn Powerwash dish spray: A good sponge and dish soap are really all you need. We recommend Dawn Powerwash for the job because it cuts through grease effectively. Plus, it’s so easy to use. Just spritz and scrub with your favorite sponge!
 • Scrub Daddy sponges: When cleaning the air fryer basket, turn to the internet’s favorite dish sponge: Scrub Daddy. It’s sturdy enough to remove food buildup and grease and more durable than traditional sponges. Just be careful not to scrub the interior cooking surface too hard, or you’ll scratch it. Pair with Scrub Daddy products like a sponge handle for a superior clean.
 • Swedish dishcloths: The air fryer isn’t clean until you wipe down the main unit. Instead of paper towels, opt for Swedish dishcloths. They’re more absorbent and reusable, and ideal for all areas of the home. Just rinse with water, wipe down the air fryer and you’re good to go!

Directions

1. Unplug the air fryer

Safety first! Turn off and unplug your air fryer. Allow it to cool completely before cleaning.

2. Clean removable parts

air fryer and removable basket on kitchen counter

Remove the basket, tray and pan. Many air-fryer accessories can be washed like any other dish, with soap and warm water. If you don’t feel like washing them by hand, place them in the dishwasher. Most air fryers feature dishwasher-safe pieces, but check the instruction manual for your specific model.

3. Clean the main unit

The main unit should never be immersed in water. Instead, take a damp cloth and wipe down the entire unit and the control panel to remove food splatters or grease residue. If you notice any food stuck on the heating coil, remove with a soft dish brush.

4. Check the heating coil

Cleaning Air Fryer heating Coil with damp cloth

Check the heating coil after each use; it’s usually in the top of the unit. If there’s oil or residue on the coil, let the unplugged machine cool, then wipe with a damp cloth or dish brush, as you would with the heating element on an electric stove.

5. Dry and reassemble

Completely towel dry or air dry all the parts before reassembling the air fryer.

FAQs

Can you clean an air fryer with water?

Yes and no. Though some foodies found filling the air fryer basket with soapy water and turning it on inside the main unit will do trick, we don’t recommend it, because it could damage the nonstick coating on the interior cooking surface. Instead, unplug the air fryer and clean the basket with warm soapy water, then wipe down the main unit with a cloth.

How often should you clean an air fryer?

The key word here is “often.” Clean after every use, or every few uses, to avoid greasy food buildup.

How do you keep an air fryer clean?

Cover the cooking surface with foil or an air-fryer liner. We prefer the latter because it’s much easier to cook with. Just pop the liner in the basket, layer ingredients on top, and remove when you’re done.

Air Fryer Cleaning Tips

 • If the basket or pan has baked-on grease, soak it in hot water and soap for 20 to 30 minutes. Then remove the now-softened gunk with a scrub brush.
 • If you notice a stinky odor, chances are you’ve got food particles trapped in or on it. Mix baking soda and water to form a paste. Then grab a scrub brush or old toothbrush and thoroughly scrub the interior.
 • Never use metal utensils to remove crumbs or baked-on grease from your air fryer. It can damage the nonstick coating and prevent the fryer from working properly.

If You See White Streaks on Your Dishes, This Is What It Means https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/white-streaks-on-dishes/ Fri, 27 Jan 2023 00:01:20 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=507359 Dishwashers are great time savers, as long as they’re working properly. Growing up in a house where every dish was washed by hand, I have a particular appreciation for these miraculous machines. Trouble is, like most complex time-saving devices, they occasionally fail.

Sometimes these failures are big, and obvious, like your dishwasher not cleaning dishes. Other times they’re smaller, but still hard to ignore. White streaks on dishes after a wash cycle is one way your dishwasher might let you down.

Why Is There White Residue on My Dishes?

There are a couple of reasons why you might be seeing white streaks or residue on your dishes after a wash cycle, and it comes down to the type of residue you’re seeing.

 • Dry residue that wipes away easily: Chances are this is a salt residue left behind by your dishwasher. Many dishwashers have a built-in salt container that introduces salt to the water and detergent mixture to soften hard water. If you add too much salt to the container, too much salt will end up in your dishwater. In this situation, white salt streaks could easily appear on your dishes and cutlery.
 • Dry residue that doesn’t wipe away easily: Is your household water supply known for being rich in minerals (AKA hard water)? If so, white streaks left on your dishes after a cycle in the dishwasher could be limescale buildup. I’m all too familiar with this problem since my own household water comes from a drilled well and we live on an island made of limestone. Limescale streaking on our dishes is nothing new. Luckily, it’s not too difficult to remove. Just drizzle a little white vinegar on the dishes and scrub the streaks. If the vinegar works, limescale is almost certainly the problem.
 • Fatty, greasy residue: Some homeowners report creasy white streaks of fat left on their dishes after a cycle—gross! If this happens to you, chances are your water isn’t hot enough to fully melt and wash away the fat left on your dishes.

Is White Residue on Dishes Harmful?

None of the common types of white streaks on dishes described above are dangerous. Salt residue, limescale buildup and residual grease are all harmless. You could ignore them if you choose, and suffer no ill effects eating off of white-streaked dishes. That said, I don’t recommend ignoring these symptoms. Even though the white streaks won’t hurt you, they usually indicate a problem with your dishwasher that could get worse if you don’t address it.

How Do I Stop White Residue from Getting on My Dishes?

 • For salt residue streaks: Add less salt to your dishwasher. In fact, if you don’t have particularly hard water, you don’t need to bother using salt at all.
 • For limescale streaks: To remove limescale, clean your dishwasher with vinegar. Fill a bowl with 1 cup of distilled white vinegar and place it in your washer’s top rack. Run a regular wash cycle with no other dishes in your washer. Chances are this will remove all the limescale streaking. If it doesn’t, repeat the process. When the limescale is gone, run one more regular cycle to flush any remaining vinegar from your dishwasher.
 • For fat residue: Try increasing the temperature your dishwasher is set to. Most dishwashers have a main wash cycle temperature of 120 to 140ºF, then a final blast of around 150ºF to remove any remaining grime. Double-check your dishwasher is connected to a hot water pipe supplying water around 120ºF.

How to Hide Your Dishwasher in Plain Sight https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/hidden-dishwasher/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 20:19:26 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=508224 Dishwashers are wonderful devices that save tons of time in the kitchen, but they’re not always beautiful to look at. In fact, depending on your taste you may never want to see it at all, except while using or repairing your dishwasher.

As someone who designed and built my own kitchen to look as beautiful as possible, I can certainly understand the impulse for a hidden dishwasher. As helpful as they are, dishwashers have a way of making an otherwise elegant kitchen design look tacky. That’s where this hack can help. It introduces the idea of a hidden dishwasher inside a kitchen cabinet that blends seamlessly with other kitchen decor.

How to Create a Hidden Dishwasher Cabinet

Cups On Kitchen Counter Above Hidden Dishwasher

There are two basic methods for hiding your dishwasher in a cabinet: Buying ready-made flat-packed cabinets from a company like IKEA or building your own cabinet from scratch. The IKEA option allows you to plan out your kitchen ahead of time using an online 3D tool. You can build a cabinet virtually, designing a portion of it to fit perfectly over the dishwasher you have in mind. This is certainly the easiest approach since IKEA cabinets don’t require much skill to assemble. That said, this is Family Handyman, so you’re probably open to the idea of building your own cabinet for a hidden dishwasher.

What You’ll Need

 • Exact measurements of your dishwasher
 • Enough MDO plywood (membrane coated) to build the walls and door of your cabinet (or perhaps all your cabinets, if you’re building or remodeling the entire kitchen)
 • 1/2-inch hardwood for rails and stiles of cabinet door (or fake drawer faces)
 • Tape measure and pencil
 • Eye and ear protection
 • Table saw
 • Chop saw
 • Drill with regular bits and European hinge jig
 • Carpenter’s square
 • Set of European cabinet hinges
 • Cabinetmaker’s glue
 • Primer and paint of your choice
 • 18-gauge brad nailer
 • Wood filler
 • 1/2-sheet sander with 80, 120, and 220-grit paper
 • Quick Grip clamps
 • Cabinet feet
 • Wood screws with cup washers
 • Screwdriver

Directions

 • Draw a detailed plan for your dishwasher cabinet, then take measurements to determine the exact dimensions of all pieces.
 • Use a table saw to cut pieces of 5/8-inch MDO plywood for the sides, back, bottom, top, door, and toe kick of your cabinet. Don’t cover the entire back of the cabinet with plywood—leave the bottom 1/3 or so open for water and drain connections, plus your dishwasher’s power cord.
 • Use a table saw and chop saw to cut strips of 1/2-inch thick hardwood for the rails and stiles (bordering pieces) of the sides and door of your cabinet. This creates a nice, simple frame-and-panel look that isn’t too challenging, but feel free to cut the hardwood into different shapes depending on the look you’re after.
 • Assemble the cabinet box with glue and 18-gauge brad nails.
 • Join the hardwood accent pieces to the cabinet box and door with glue and clamps. Let everything dry overnight.
 • Drill holes on the inside face of the door for European hinges.
 • Fill all nail holes with wood filler.
 • Sand, prime and paint the cabinet and door.
 • Install the cabinet feet and kick plate using screws and 18-gauge nails respectively.
 • Install the cabinet in your kitchen using wood screws and cup washers to join it to the wall and adjoining cabinet.
 • Install your dishwasher inside the cabinet.
 • Install the door with European hinges.
 • Enjoy not seeing your dishwasher!

Things to Keep in Mind

Building your own cabinet isn’t easy. It takes lots of tools and know-how, and if you’ve never done it before it pays to have an experienced cabinetmaker nearby to lend a hand. Even if you know how to build a cabinet from scratch, matching the design and color of the one you’re building to any pre-existing cabinets in your home isn’t easy. If you have any doubts about your ability to pull it off, consider going with the IKEA option.

Don’t try to save money by using MDF or some other substandard sheet material to build your cabinet. Since the cabinet will be holding a heavy dishwasher, 5/8-inch plywood is the only appropriate choice.

Once your dishwasher concealing cabinet is built and installed, make sure you open the door every time you run a wash cycle. This ensures vibration and moisture buildup won’t damage your handiwork.

Keep in mind that this could make doing things like fixing a smelly dishwasher harder! And for more hidden around the house ideas, take a look at this hidden laundry room.

Spring Cleaning Your Freezer https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/freezer-cleaning-organization-ideas/ Wed, 18 Jan 2023 20:37:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=506023 It’s almost dinnertime and you haven’t been to the store. Perfect time to see what the freezer holds. You look inside and start the internal negotiations.

What is this? Was this chicken good when I put it in here? Did I buy that bag of green beans during this decade?

If you clean your freezer regularly, these questions are easier to answer. But cleaning the freezer is easy to put off. After all, you open your refrigerator 20 times a day. You notice the fresh fruit that needs to be eaten or the milk that’s beginning to turn, as well as spills and crumbs.

Freezers, though? Sometimes they’re a black hole. Food goes in, often with the best of intentions, never to be seen again. Cleaning your freezer lets you re-familiarize yourself with its contents. Doing this regularly can help you save money and waste less food.

I spoke with Alicia Sokolowski, president and co-CEO of AspenClean, to learn the best way to tackle this necessary task. This method works on any freezer, including side-by-side, French door, top, standalone and chest types. The only difference may be the defrosting time.

Gather Freezer Cleaning Supplies

 • Dishwashing soap;
 • Natural kitchen cleaner (optional);
 • Microfiber cloths;
 • Vinegar and water mixture (optional);
 • Dish sponge;
 • Small bucket or bowl;
 • Old towels or newspaper;
 • Cooler large enough to store what’s in the freezer;
 • Permanent marker pen.

Move Food to Cooler

Don’t try to clean around the food in your freezer. Empty it so you can take out the shelves, drawers and other removable parts. They’ll be easier to clean. And without a bunch of stuff in your way, you can really get into the nooks and crannies.

Sort and Discard

Toss old food or anything you can’t identify, Sokolowski says. As you’re filling your cooler, examine each item. Are you really going to eat that? Is it covered in ice crystals? Do you remember putting it in there? When in doubt, throw it out.

Label things you want to keep with a permanent marker pen, noting the contents and the date (if known) on the side of the container. This will cut down the guesswork next time you’re rummaging for something to cook. Keep the cooler lid closed until you’re ready to refill the freezer.

Protect Your Floor

Place old towels or newspapers on the floor around the bottom of the appliance. Even if you have a frost-free or self-defrosting freezer with little ice accumulation, you’ll likely have some melting ice crystals, as well as drips from your cleaning solution.

Chest and standalone freezers are often manual defrost instead of frost-free. With these, expect more melting ice and longer defrost times, especially if there’s a lot of ice buildup. Be prepared with extra towels.

Unplug the Freezer

Don’t try to clean your freezer while it’s running. You’ll waste energy, Sokolowski says, and add unnecessary complications. Frost will accumulate, which will melt and refreeze as you try to clean. You’re taking everything out anyway, so unplug it.

Keep the refrigerator door closed while you clean the freezer. Without power, a fridge with the door closed stays cold for four hours, according to Foodsafety.gov.

Remove the Shelves

Take out the shelves, drawers and other removable parts. Be sure to let them come to room temperature before washing. If you fill your sink with hot soapy water and dunk in your ice-cold shelves, they’re likely to crack, Sokolowski says.

Clean the Inside

Wipe down the interior with a sponge and a natural kitchen cleaner, hot soapy water or a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water. Rinse and wipe dry with a microfiber cloth or towel.

Sokolowski recommends natural cleaners only. Look for certifications from the Environmental Working Group and the anti-cruelty Coalition for Consumer Information on Cosmetics — known by their “Leaping Bunny” logo — to reduce your cleaning footprint.

Clean the Shelves

With the shelves and drawers at room temperature, wash them by hand in the sink with hot soapy water. Rinse and air dry, or dry with a microfiber cloth or towel. Once dry, put them back in the freezer.

Plug In and Refill

Plug in the freezer and let it reach freezing temperature before refilling. Organize your freezer so you can find things fast and avoid a menagerie of unrecognizable, forgotten items the next time you clean — which, according to Sokolowski, should be in three to four months.

The fridge’s top panels offer 22 options and the bottom set offers 18. If you’d rather start with a pre-designated color combination, there are preset themes.

And of course, if you want your fridge to go incognito as a traditional fridge, you can decide to turn off the color settings and put it into the classic LG Lux Gray or White mode. Plus, the color can be functional—this fridge will flash a color if you’ve left a door ajar, for instance. You can also decide to turn the upper right panel transparent to easily see what food you have inside, making trips to the grocery store a breeze. Unfortunately, it can’t help you with organizing your fridgeyet.

One of our other favorite features is that the LG MoodUP refrigerator is WiFi-enabled, and you can even sync it up with Bluetooth to seamlessly stream music. The best part? You can actually set up your LED doors to change color with the beat of your tunes, making it the most interactive music experience you’ve had in your kitchen yet.

Here’s Why It Might Be Time to Stop Using Liquid Dishwasher Detergent https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dishwasher-pods-vs-liquid/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 20:52:39 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=501532 Doing the dishes is a familiar chore for any homeowner. Whether you love to neatly load your reliable dishwasher just so, or never forget to add a bit of vinegar to your load so your dishes sparkle post-wash, dishwashing preferences vary from person to person. Not only that, but dishwasher detergent is also a personal preference between using tablets, liquid or gel pods. While all three will get your dishes clean, one is really the most efficient to use: dishwasher tablets.

Why Should You Use Tablets in Your Dishwasher?

Unlike liquid dishwasher detergents, which dissolve when the dishwasher fills with water, tablets do the opposite. In fact, dishwasher tablets offer a steady release of dishwasher detergent throughout the dishwashing cycle—meaning, cleaner dishes.

Dishwashing tabs also tend to be a more cost-effective form of detergent. Tabs do all of the hard work that liquid and gels do, but they’re better for your wallet as well as better for your dishwasher.

Tabs use fewer products per load (making them more eco-friendly), which is easier on your machine and prolongs the dishwasher’s lifespan. The fact that dishwasher tabs work well for households with hard water is another bonus. Tabs scour food residue and stains on coffee cups and grease on pots and pans.

The Difference Between Tablets vs. Liquid vs. Gel Packs

The key components of dishwashing soap are bleach and enzymes (bleach beats stains and enzymes scrub the leftover food).

Liquid Detergent

Liquid gel dishwasher detergent, according to MQ Appliance Repair, is an option for folks who like to have control over the amount of dishwashing detergent they use. In addition to the controlled amount, a liquid gel is water-based which makes for a gentler dishwashing detergent. Depending on the brand of liquid dishwashing detergent, some make leave streaks on silverware and dishes.

Gel Packs

Dishwashing gel packs are pre-measured liquid dishwasher detergent in a quick-dissolving pod. Due to the pods’ pre-measured nature, they are easy to use. However, dishwasher pods can be more costly than liquid and/or tabs. It’s worth noting that not all dishwashing detergent brands come in pack formation.

Powder Tabs

Pre-measured powder tablet dishwasher detergent offers the exact amount of detergent needed in a tablet or brick formation. There is a secret dishwashing agent hidden inside the tablet known as the power ball agent. The power ball agent acts as a rinse-aid for your dishes with little to no residue.

Other Tips for Using Your Dishwasher Effectively

Besides using dishwasher tabs, frequently cleaning the inside of your dishwasher can expand its lifespan. Wiping away any build-up on your dishwasher arm is a good place to start. Cleaning away the residue in the float switch as well as cleaning the dishwasher valve screen are all ways to have a healthy dishwasher and efficient wash cycles.

Common Dryer Repairs You Can Do Yourself https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/common-dryer-repairs-you-can-do-yourself/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 18:21:38 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=501578 Here’s the first thing to know about dryer repair: You can solve some common dryer troubles yourself. There’s no need to find a technician, schedule a service call or pay hundreds dollars for dryer repair.

The dryer repair fixes we show in this article correct about 90 percent of dryer breakdowns. Most repairs take about an hour, but set aside extra time to locate replacement parts. Aside from basic tools like a socket set and screwdrivers, you may need a continuity tester or multimeter to diagnose the problem.

Unplug Your Dryer Before Repairing It

The first step in any appliance repair is to make sure it’s getting electricity. Unplugged cords and tripped breakers are a leading cause of appliance “breakdowns.”

How to Disassemble a Dryer

Dryer Repair
Most dryer repairs require some disassembly of the outer cabinet so you can get at the parts inside and you might not even need a dryer repairman. Dryer disassembly is slightly different depending on where the lint filter is located. For gas dryers, most repairs require that you remove the top and front (not the back or sides) to access the parts.

If your dryer’s lint filter is inside the front door, disassemble it this way: First, remove the screws at each corner of the control panel. Flip the panel up and back to expose the screws in the top panel. Remove the screws, then pull the top toward you and lift it off. To open the bottom panel, release the spring catches by shoving a putty knife into the slot just above them. With the bottom panel open, you can remove the front panel by removing two screws at the top and two at the bottom.

If your filter slides into the top of the dryer, remove the screws alongside the filter slot. Using a putty knife, release the two spring catches located under the top panel at the front. Tilt the top panel up like a car hood and remove the screws that hold the front panel in place.

How to Fix a Dryer That Won’t Start

If your dryer seems absolutely dead when you turn it on, chances are the door switch is bad or the plunger is broken or bent. Door switches wear out from normal use, but repeatedly slamming the door can speed up their demise.

Start by checking the plunger located on the door for dryer troubleshooting. If it’s missing or bent, replace it. If the plunger checks out, the next step of dryer troubleshooting is to remove the top cabinet panel to gain access to the door switch. See the disassembly instructions.

Test the switch for continuity. If the switch is good, test the thermal fuse mounted on the blower housing. If you have a gas dryer with the lint filter in the door, access the thermal fuse by opening the bottom panel. If the filter slides into the top of the machine, remove the entire front panel. On an electric dryer, remove the rear service panel.

If you don’t get a continuity reading from the thermal fuse, do NOT simply replace it. A blown thermal fuse is a warning that you have other serious problems—either a malfunctioning thermostat or a clogged vent. Fix those before replacing the fuse.

What to Do if Your Dryer Is Making Noises

If your dryer is making thumping or rumbling sounds, the most likely culprit is worn out drum support rollers. Replace all of them. If the noise continues, replace the tensioner roller (see below). Since it takes longer to disassemble the machine than to actually replace the rollers and belts, we recommend replacing both of them at the same time.

Dryer making noises

Dryer Isn’t Heating

If you’re dryer isn’t drying clothes, the first thing to do is check the airflow from the dryer vent tube. It gets clogged with lint, preventing airflow and causing it to take a long time to dry clothes, if it’ll dry them at all. If that’s not it, there are a few other common fixes for a dryer that isn’t drying, everything from checking the breaker box to cleaning the lint filter.

However, there are other problems that could cause a dryer to tumble but not heat. If that’s the case, check the thermal fuse for continuity. If the thermal fuse checks out, move on to the radiant sensor, if you have a gas dryer. It monitors the igniter and powers up the gas valve coils when the igniter reaches peak temperature. A bum sensor will stop the whole show. Test it for continuity and replace it if it fails. If the sensor is good, disconnect the electrical connector to the igniter and check it for continuity. Again, replace it if it fails the continuity test.

If both the radiant sensor and the igniter pass the test, replace the gas valve coils. To replace them, remove the retaining plate, unplug the sensors and pull them off the gas valve.

If the thermal fuse on your electric dryer checks out, test the heater element for continuity. Replace the element if you don’t get continuity.

Dryer Doesn’t Rotate

It might be a broken belt. To replace the belt, remove the front cabinet panel and lift the entire drum out of the cabinet. Then, fire up your shop vacuum and suck out all the lint. Then spin the tensioner roller by hand to see if it runs smoothly and examine it for cracks. Replace the tensioner if it fails either test.

Reinstall the drum and wrap the new belt around it (ribs facing the drum). Some tensioners are mounted behind the motor, so they’re difficult to see from the front access panel. You’ll have to do this by feel. Reach your hands around the blower housing and lift the tensioner up while you route the belt around the motor pulley.

Dryer Door Won’t Stay Shut

If your dryer door won’t stay closed, chances are the latch is either bent or missing, or the strike is worn. The fix is cheap and easy. Buy the parts from any appliance parts store. Then grab pliers, a couple of small, straight-slot screwdrivers and a roll of masking tape.

Grab the bent or broken latch and yank it out. Then install the new one, pushing in firmly until the locking tabs seat. Next, protect the door’s finish with tape and remove the old strike. Jam a small screwdriver into the strike and bend the metal locking tab inward. Pry upward with a second screwdriver to pop it out (Photo 2). Snap in the new strike and you’re back in the laundry business.

Everything You Need to Know About The Laundress Product Recall https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/the-laundress-product-recall/ Mon, 05 Dec 2022 20:51:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=496317 Here’s what you need to know about the luxe cleaning company’s recall, and how to get your reimbursement.

]]>
The Laundress, the popular cleaning brand that makes luxe, chemical-free detergents, recently recalled all of its products. The news came as a shock to fans of the brand, which is highly regarded for its high-efficiency laundry detergent, home dry-cleaning kits, detergents for sensitive skin, as well as for being one of our best-smelling laundry detergents.

The company itself put out a “safety notice” alert on its website and social media accounts. In the alert, consumers were advised to “immediately stop using all The Laundress products in your possession. We have identified the potential presence of elevated levels of bacteria in some of our products that present a safety concern.”

Customers demanded more answers and were understandably shaken, citing their use of the popular products for their families. By last week, The Laundress provided more information on the safety notice on its website. Here’s what you need to know.

Why Did The Laundress Recall Its Products?

The Laundress products were found to be contaminated with bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can contaminate and grow on laundry.

According to Consumer Reports, bacteria such as Pseudomonas, at higher levels, can cause infection in the blood, lungs and wound sites. It’s particularly dangerous to those who are immunocompromised and other vulnerable people. To make matters worse, some strains of Pseudomonas are resistant to antibiotics, which can increase the severity of infections.

“Based on our investigation to date, we are not aware of any adverse health impacts related to this issue,” The Laundress’ said in a statement. The company also says that people with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by this bacteria.

What To Do If You Have The Laundress’s Products?

To start, consult the list of products in the safety notice, just released by The Laundress in consultation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Flagged products run the gamut from spot cleaner to denim detergent to glass cleaner. If you have any of the company’s products in your laundry room or elsewhere around the house, stop using them, per the company’s statement.

Next, The Laundress has set up a site for consumer reimbursements on the recalled products. According to the company, there are several things you’ll need to request reimbursement:

 • Get a photo of the lot code for an impacted product. This is located on the bottom or side of the bottle with your initials and today’s date written in marker. If you have multiple products, you may include all products in the same photo, as long as they have your initials and the date written next to each lot code on all of the products.
 • The email address you used when you placed your order if you purchased online directly from thelaundress.com.
 • A receipt for the impacted product in the period January 2021—November 2022.

Homeowner’s Guide To Mini Fridges https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/homeowners-guide-to-mini-fridges/ Wed, 30 Nov 2022 21:36:37 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=495056 As long as there’s an outlet nearby, mini fridges provide convenient access to refrigerated items practically anywhere, especially where space is tight.

Although they’re most commonly associated with dorm rooms, I’ve experienced the benefits of a mini fridge in spaces like basement wet bars and attic offices. By eliminating the hassle of going up and down stairs whenever you want a drink or snack, a mini fridge significantly increases the convenience and livability of these spaces.

Plus, because they’re so small, mini fridges can sometimes fit on a countertop instead of the floor, as long as there’s enough clearance for ventilation. Mini fridges vary in capacity from about 1.7 to 4.5 cubic feet, so it’s likely you’ll find one that fits your specific needs.

How Much Is a Mini Fridge?

Because mini-fridges come in lots of sizes and types, prices vary widely. While traditional freestanding mini fridges can cost as little as $100, Brian Madson, refrigeration project manager at Perlick, says built-in under-counter refrigerators start at around $1,000, with higher-end models costing more than $3,500.

Do Mini Fridges Use a Lot of Electricity?

Compared to other appliances, no. “Even high-performance under-counter refrigeration uses about the same amount as the average flat-screen TV,” Madson says.

How Many Watts Does a Mini Fridge Use?

According to Madson, mini-fridges use about 200 to 400 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year depending on size and the design of the refrigeration system. That’s impressive considering a standard desktop computer pulls about 600kWh per year.

How Much Does a Mini Fridge Cost To Operate?

On average, Madson says a mini fridge should cost “less than $3 per month if Energy Star rated, less than $5 per month if not.”

Considerations When Buying a Mini Fridge

To ensure you choose the best model for you and your space, keep these factors in mind:

 • Freezer section: Think about whether you’ll need to store frozen food or ice trays in your mini fridge. If you do, make sure the freezer is big enough for those items. If you don’t, choose a model without a freezer to maximize the available refrigeration space.
 • Capacity: Sounds obvious, but make sure the mini fridge can hold everything you plan to put in it.
 • Space: Again, obvious, but don’t purchase a model too large for your intended space. This is especially important if it’s going behind a bar, or a defined spot between cabinets.
 • Electrical cord: The cord must be long enough to reach to the nearest outlet without creating a tripping hazard.
 • Ice maker: These are generally found only in top-of-the-line mini fridges. If ice is a priority, consider a dedicated ice maker.
 • Primary use: If you have a specific purpose for your mini-fridge, like for an outdoor bar or a wine reserve where temperature control may be important, choose one that can stand up to the elements.

Five Great Mini Fridges

This Simple Trick Dries Wet Dishes in Your Dishwasher https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/dishwasher-dishes-drying-hack/ Tue, 15 Nov 2022 20:32:19 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=491833 This dishwasher hack will dry your dishes in just five minutes!

]]>
Let’s face it. Dishwashers are one of those kitchen appliances most of us can’t live without, and for good reason — they make cleaning up after any meal a breeze. However, it can still be tedious and time-consuming to dry a full rack of dishes if they’re still wet after a wash cycle.

Luckily, influencer Barbara Costello, the cleaning hack lifesaver with the TikTok handle @brunchwithbabs, has a better idea. In this video, Babs — who calls herself Grandma Babs — teaches viewers how to skip hand-drying with this hack.

Grandma Babs is no stranger to dishwasher hacks. Through her 2.7 million TikTok following, she’s taught users tons of cleaning hacks, like how to load a dishwasher the right way.

The Dishwasher Drying Hack

♬ original sound – everyone’s grandmother

Rather than letting your dishes sit in the dishwasher for three days until they dry, as one user commented, Babs showed us an easy trick to speed the process.

According to Babs, simply grab a terrycloth dish towel. Then at the end of the cleaning cycle, place the towel inside the door of the dishwasher and close it. Wait five minutes, and bam — the dishes are dry and ready to be put away!

This isn’t the only dishwasher hack we’ve learned from TikTok. Did you know you can also put aluminum foil in your dishwasher to make your flatware shine like new? We put this hack to the test and it actually worked.

However, not everything you read on TikTok is a good idea. One viral hack suggested putting your toilet seat in the dishwasher. Epidemiologists warn you should never attempt this hack because it spreads bacteria from the toilet seat to the other items in your dishwasher during and after that wash cycle.

How to Clean a Toaster with a Hair Dryer—Yes, We Said Hair Dryer https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-clean-a-toaster/ Mon, 07 Nov 2022 19:17:42 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=490233 Your toaster gets a lot of use, especially if you’re a regular breakfast person or like to make a toasted sandwich for lunch. But does anyone think about cleaning their toaster? And if so, how often should you clean it? Think about the last time you cleaned your toaster. Was it last year? Two years ago? Last month? Believe it or not, cleaning this kitchen appliance regularly is important to avoid build-up. Too much crumb build-up can prevent your toaster from toasting bread evenly or even start a toaster fire.

With so many other appliances and home items to keep clean, it’s easy to forget the small stuff. Thankfully, learning how to clean a toaster isn’t complicated with a helpful hack.

How to Clean a Toaster with a Hair Dryer

You may have never thought about breaking out a hair dryer to clean an appliance, but thanks to a hack from TikTok user @mama_mila, it won’t be long before you know how to clean your toaster with one. In the video, @mama_mila shows how to clean a toaster with this tip.

@mama_mila_ So easy, you can do it while dinner is cooking 🥘 When was the last time you cleaned your kettle and toaster? #cleaninghacks #cleanhome #hometips #kitchenhacks #homesweethome ♬ So Fresh, So Clean – Outkast

To start cleaning your toaster with a hairdryer, first, unplug your toaster. You don’t want any accidents to happen. Next, plug in the hairdryer and aim it into the toaster slots to dislodge any stuck crumbs. Although the TikTok creator doesn’t specify how long you should use the dryer on your toaster, it’s easy to see if it’s working when you see crumbs moving down. Give it as long as it needs, and then turn off the hair dryer.

From there, remove the crumb tray from the bottom of your toaster. After you pull it out, wash it off in your sink to eliminate the crumbs. Once you’ve rinsed the toaster’s tray, dry it off with a paper towel and put it back inside your toaster.

If you’re looking for other cleaning tips on TikTok, be sure you tread carefully; there are some “CleanTok” dos and don’ts you should check out before you try a dangerous hack. Also, try this cleaning hack of putting a ball of aluminum foil in your dishwasher.

Does It Work?

Using my hair dryer, I followed the steps from the video. First, I pointed the hair dryer into the machine and watched as crumbs began to fly. After doing this for about two minutes, I turned off the blow dryer. Inside my toaster did look a lot cleaner as far as the toaster slots were concerned. Next, I removed the tray and dumped the crumbs before rinsing and drying it. Count this among one of the craziest cleaning tips that work because my toaster was almost spotless after this hack.

My only concern is for people who haven’t deep cleaned their toaster in a long time. You, like myself, might notice some caked-on messes inside that you can’t dislodge with a dryer. If you need to give your toaster more of a scrub, don’t be afraid to do so; there are hacks for that, too.

How to Clean a Toaster Without a Hair Dryer

The hair dryer hack should work for most toasters, but if you need a little extra help for an especially dirty one, there are a few options you have to choose from. From a quick scrub to shake down, try adding one or more of these to your kitchen cleaning checklist.

The Toothbrush Method

This is the way to go if your toaster needs a good scrub down inside. Start by unplugging your toaster. Then, remove and clean the crumb tray. Set the tray aside and mix equal parts of vinegar and water. Once you’ve got your cleaning solution, dip the toothbrush in the liquid and use it to scrub down the inside of the toaster. Be gentle with the electrical components (again, don’t do this with the toaster plugged in!). Once it looks clean, dry the inside with a cloth or paper towel. Make sure you haven’t left behind any linty bits, though.

The Quick Clean

Maybe you don’t have a hair dryer handy and need to give your toaster a quick clean. If that’s the case, the easier way to dislodge those pesky crumbs doesn’t require any equipment. First, unplug your toaster, then take it to your kitchen sink. Remove the crumb tray, clean it off, and set it aside. Next, take the toaster in both hands and dump it upside down over your sink. Give it a shake and watch as the crumbs fall into the basin. Shake the toaster as much as needed until no other crumbs are falling out. Once you’re done cleaning it, reassemble your toaster. This method is also helpful if your toaster doesn’t have a crumb tray and it’s a good cleaning habit to do on a routine basis.

Dry Brush the Inside

What do you do if your toaster is moderately dirty, but there isn’t anything that needs scrubbing? If you don’t have a blow dryer, try using a bottle brush. Start by unplugging the toaster and cleaning off the tray. Then, take the dry bottle brush and insert it into the toaster slots. Gently brush around to remove stuck crumbs. After you’re done, insert the tray back into the slot.

Are Front Loading Washing Machines Better Than Top Loaders? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/top-loading-vs-front-loading/ Mon, 07 Nov 2022 16:54:48 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=488622 Yankees vs. Red Sox. Ali vs. Frazier. Top loader vs. front loader?

Great rivalries get people amped up, and the washing machine debate is no exception. For decades, top-loading machines ruled the home market. To use a front loader, you had to go to a laundromat. But after a fitful reintroduction in the late 1990s, front loaders for home use have gained steam in recent years.

Passions run high. Perhaps you’ve owned both, but you like the energy efficiency of front loaders. Maybe top-loading washers have always worked for you, so why fix what isn’t broken?

Where do you come down? We want to know! Check out the pros and cons of each, then vote in our poll.

Top-Loading Washing Machines Are Better

If you were born before the year 2000 and had a washing machine in your house, it was most likely a top loader. Even today, traditional and high efficiency (HE) top loaders are the most popular style of washer.

Familiar, reliable and affordable, top-loading washing machines maintain a stronghold on U.S. consumers. Here are some reasons why:

Shorter cycles

Traditional agitating top loaders generally have shorter cycles than front-loading machines, according to Consumer Reports. The normal cycle can last as little as 35 minutes, the express cycle even less. That’s plenty of time to get your clothes clean, says Patric Richardson, the Laundry Evangelist and author of Laundry Love: Finding Joy in a Common Chore.

As long as you use warm water and don’t overdo the detergent, Richardson says “the 30-minute cycle is fine, no matter how dirty your clothes are.” In comparison, the normal setting on a front-loading washing machine can last more than an hour.

Easy to load

Who hasn’t started the wash and then found a stray sock or two? Opening the lid and tossing in clothes, even after the wash starts, is easy with a top loader. Front loaders have locking front doors to keep water in once the cycle starts, so you must stop the washer to add any forgotten items.

Less maintenance

Front loading washing machines are notorious for harboring mold when water gets trapped in the door gasket. Top loaders don’t have that problem. Water doesn’t come up to the lid at all, so there’s no need for a watertight seal. That means air circulates more freely, even if you leave the lid closed between loads.

Front-Loading Washing Machines Are Better

The first automatic washing machine, introduced in 1937, was a front loader, and they’ve been used in commercial laundries and laundromats ever since. Here’s why they work for the home market, too:

Energy efficient

“Front loaders use less water than top loaders,” says Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly Company. Specifically, front-loaders with an Energy Star certification use 50 percent less water than traditional top loaders. That translates to less energy to heat the water and agitate your clothes, making front loaders better for the environment and your energy bill.

Front loaders get the nod for efficiency even with longer cycles, according to Energy Star and Consumer Reports. Not only do they use less water and less energy, they spin faster and extract more water, cutting down on drying time.

Gentler on clothes

Front loaders clean your clothes by tumbling action and gravity rather than an internal agitator, i.e. the piece that sticks up in the middle of traditional top loader. This means the washer is less harsh on fabrics, according to testers at Consumer Reports. This is true even when compared to HE top loaders, which use an impeller instead of an agitator.

Space saving

Washing machines are big. Couple them with a dryer and we’re talking major real estate in your home. Front loaders have the advantage of being stackable as-is, although you might have to buy a stacking kit; check compatibility with your brand before purchasing. This means if you move to a smaller place, you don’t have to purchase a new washer and dryer.

Top loaders come in stackable versions, but Shimek says “in most cases, the top-loading machines are of a smaller capacity.”

A Top Loader Is Better If You…

 • Like to presoak. Top-loading machines let you fill the washer and give your dirty clothes a good soak.
 • Have difficulty bending and reaching into the drum of a front-loading machine, which is much lower to the ground.
 • Are a traditionalist. Many people like top loaders because that’s what they’ve always used.
 • Don’t want to worry about mold. Mold can grow in any washer, but it’s less likely with a top loader.

A Front Loader is Better If You…

 • Wash a lot of large items. Front loaders can handle bulky things like comforters with ease because there’s no central agitator.
 • Have accessibility needs. Front-loading machines give wheelchair users and smaller people easier access to the door, drum and controls.
 • Are motivated by climate concerns. Front loaders use much less water and receive better Energy Star ratings.
 • Live in an apartment. While top loaders come in small sizes, front loaders can be stacked without sacrificing capacity.

The Better Washing Machine Is?

So, what’s your verdict? Are you switching loyalties or more secure in your choice than ever?

What To Know About Electric Dryers https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/electric-dryers/ Thu, 03 Nov 2022 18:54:03 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=489686 Due to the potential health and climate issues associated with natural gas, some U.S. cities are banning gas-powered appliances in new construction projects or phasing them out with incentive programs. At the same time, electric dryers are becoming more popular.

Electric dryers produce heat in a different way. Instead of a gas jet, electric dryers employ a heating element and blower to generate and dispense the hot air to dry your clothes.

How To Tell if a Dryer Is Electric or Gas

The easiest way is checking for a gas hookup in the back. Gas dryers will have a gas hookup and an electrical plug, while electric dryers only have the plug.

According to Ron Shimek, president of Mr. Appliance, a Neighborly company, the electrical plugs themselves will also be different. “A gas dryer has a normal electrical plug you would see on any other appliance,” he says, “whereas an electric dryer has a larger heavy-duty plug that cannot be plugged into a 110V outlet.”

Does an Electric Dryer Need To Be Vented?

Yes, since dryers generate warm, moist air as the clothes inside them dry. Shimek says without venting, that moisture would accumulate in your laundry room and could lead to mold. While ventless dryers are an option, it takes considerably longer for them to dry clothes, and they generate water that must be drained.

Can You Run an Electric Dryer on a Regular Outlet?

No, due to their increased electrical supply requirements. An electric dryer requires its own 240V circuit. If you plug an electric dryer into a regular outlet, it won’t work. And if it doesn’t automatically trip the breaker, it could start an electrical fire.

Is an Electric Dryer More Efficient Than a Gas Dryer?

No. Shimek says since electric dryers take longer to come up to operating temperature and don’t get as hot as gas dryers, they must run longer to dry the same amount of clothing.

What To Consider When Buying an Electric Dryer

Just like any large appliance, make sure you’re buying the best model for your needs. Consider these features when comparing different makes and models.

Power source

Consider whether you already have a 240V outlet in your laundry room. If you don’t and prefer to avoid the additional cost and hassle of having one installed, it may be more convenient to go with a gas dryer.

Size

Fhm Dryer Sale Gettyimages 1040176466 Jvedit

Shimek also recommends you consider the size of the machine itself. Make sure you know how large a dryer you can fit in your laundry room. And you’ll need at least four feet of room in front of the dryer for easy loading and unloading of your laundry.

Capacity

Shimek recommends you consider “how many people live in your home and how many loads of laundry you need to dry at a time.”

Base your dryer capacity on your washer size. In general, your dryer should provide twice as much room as your washing machine. So if you have a 3.5 cubic foot washer, choose a dryer with a least seven cubic feet of capacity.

Vented/ventless

While most electric dryers are vented, ventless options exist for those unable to install the necessary ductwork necessary, like renters or those with structural limitations.

Instead of expelling the hot, moist air outside, ventless dryers recirculate that air through the drum of the machine. This generates condensation than needs to be drained. Ventless dryers also take longer to dry your laundry than vented types.

Settings

Think about specific drying features you plan on utilizing. Settings like “refresh” for quickly fluffing up clean items, or “sanitation” cycles that eliminate germs and bacteria with extra-hot air, are a few options that could be useful.

Should You Have a Portable Stove? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/portable-stove/ Thu, 20 Oct 2022 15:58:59 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=485727 Over the last couple of years, I’ve used portable stoves far more than my kitchen range!

First, my husband and I renovated an abandoned house, and it took months before we had the power and propane lines hooked up. During that time we cooked on our two-burner portable propane camping stove and mini boat grill.

Now, when we’re not at home, we’re either camping in our van or staying at a studio in town that lacks a kitchen. At the latter, we cook with a portable induction burner and a toaster oven.

In truth, this isn’t the first time I’ve relied on portable stoves; it’s covered much of my life. From cooking in a hurricane recovery zone to backpacking to unconventional housing situations, I’ve come to love and depend on portable stoves of all sorts. But they’re not for everyone. Here’s how to decide if a portable stove is right for you.

What Is a Portable Stove?

A portable stove is any cooking device you can easily pack up and transport in your car. The most common ones run off propane or electricity. Depending on which you choose, they’re great for:

 • Picnicking and camping;
 • Jobsites;
 • Large meals when you need supplemental cooking surfaces;
 • Boats;
 • Tailgating;
 • Catering and buffets;
 • Road trips (think cooking at a hotel);
 • Canning;
 • Brewing beer;
 • Backup for when the power goes out;
 • Disaster zones, especially for boiling water to make it potable.

Types of Portable Stoves

Whether you choose a gas-burning or electric stove depends on what you’re using it for and whether you have access to electricity and/or a ventilated space.

While some gas burners are rated for use inside, they will lower the air quality. However, if you’re in a place without power, gas is an obvious and excellent choice.

Gas portable stoves

 • Classic camping stoves: The most popular type, these come with two burners, usually with windscreens on the side that fold up under a lid. They run off the common green disposable propane canisters, and many can be adapted to run off a barbecue grill-size tank.
 • Fixed-base single-burner stoves: These have square or round bases that sit directly on a table and run off various fuels, most commonly propane or butane. They usually don’t have sides or windscreens, so they can accommodate larger pots but don’t fare as well on blustery days.
 • Canister-base single-burner stoves: In this configuration, the cook surface rests on top of the fuel source. These are lighter and more compact, popular for backpacking and emergency use. They’re less stable, however, especially with larger or heavier pots.
 • Portable grills: While not technically stoves, boat and RV grills that run off propane travel well and cook some types of food marvelously. However, they aren’t great for boiling water or anything that requires temperature control, like simmering. You’ll also need a pot or pan that’s heat-resistant.
 • Specialty propane stoves: Companies are getting creative with portable stoves, like Solo Stove’s Pi propane or wood-fired pizza oven, this tabletop outdoor griddle from Blackstone and this large freestanding burner from FireDisc.
 • Specialty fuels: Although most portable burners run on propane, a few use other combustible liquids like alcohol, kerosene, isobutane and butane.

Electric portable stoves

 • Conventional burners: Aka traditional coil burners (like on an electric range), these are often the most affordable choice. But they hold less weight and are the least efficient with power, temperature control and ease of cleaning.
 • Portable hot plates: These are mechanically similar to a conventional burner, but with a smooth surface to make them look more sleek and easier to clean.
 • Induction burners: These heat through magnetic induction, instead of thermal conduction, essentially heating the pot instead of the burner. Their smooth tops are energy efficient, easy to clean, give precise temperature control and boil water insanely fast. Because the cooking surface doesn’t get hot the same way as conventional burners, they’re safer and put less heat into the room. Not all pots will work on them; it must have a ferrous (contains iron) element incorporated into the bottom.
 • Infrared burners: These aren’t quite as efficient as induction, but any pan will work on them. They’re also smooth, so easy to clean.

Features to Consider When Shopping for a Portable Stove

The first consideration, of course, is whether gas or electric makes the most sense for your situation. Beyond that, here are some other features to keep in mind:

 • Price: Think about the upfront cost, as well as the long-term fuel/electric costs and replacement costs. If you plan on using your portable stove a lot, a more expensive yet efficient, sturdy, top-quality model may save money down the road. Also, higher-quality gas models tend to simmer better.
 • Portability: Consider weight and compactness vs. how far you plan on lugging it.
 • Burner size: It’s best for these to be about the same size as the bottom of the pan. Some electric models feature dual elements, allowing you to cook multiple pan sizes efficiently. When buying a double-burner, consider if you can (or need to) put two large pots on it, side by side.
 • Btus: On gas stoves, British Thermal Units (Btus) range from around 7,000 to 20,000. If you make a lot of pasta (i.e. boiling large pots of water), go for the upper end. If you’re just cooking a few eggs, you can get away with the lower end.
 • Wattage: On electric units, wattages typically range from 1,500 to 2,500 depending on the burner size and quality. If you’re under-powered, it will be frustrating. Lower watt units may take a long time to boil a pot of water or heat a large pot of food, although it can be better in some situations with limited power. Also, make sure the unit can plug into a standard 120-volt outlet.
 • Safety: Consider if it’s important that the unit comes with an automatic shut-off should you knock it over or forget to turn it off. Also, especially with electric burners, the heat on cheaper units can sometimes extend into the body and knobs.
 • Wind protection: Especially with gas, outside cooking will be frustrating and slow if there are no panels to keep the wind at bay. But sides or a wraparound also limit the size pan you can use.
 • Type of fuel: For gas burners, consider the availability and cost of the type of fuel it uses. Isobutane can be harder to find than propane. Also, if it’s propane, ideally it’s nice to have the option to hook it to a five or 20-pound tank; often this requires a simple adapter. That way you’re not wasting all of those little green bottles.

Best Portable Stoves

Dual-burner propane stove

Fhm Ecomm Coleman Camp Stove Via Walmart.com

Coleman has made these forever, and their Classic Propane Gas Camping Stove is still the best for quality vs. price. Coleman and many other manufacturers make much fancier ones as well, which are also great, but at three to four times the price.

Induction single-burner stove

Induction single-burner stove

With features like 20 power settings, Duxtop’s 9600LS isn’t the cheapest induction burner. But it’s one of the best for cooking with extra precision while taking up minimal space.

Compact stove

Fhm Ecomm Jet Boil Portable Stove Via Cabellas.com

The Jetboil cooking system is a canister-based single-burner stove, so it’s small, but powerful and more stable than most. It’ll boil water for coffee or heat up your soup in just a few minutes, even in the wind.

What To Do When Your Icemaker Is Not Making Ice https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/icemaker-not-making-ice/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/icemaker-not-making-ice/#respond Wed, 05 Oct 2022 18:51:23 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=481492 It's frustrating when you push your glass against the ice dispenser in your refrigerator door and nothing happens.

In more than 30 years of appliance repair experience, I've seen just about everything that can go wrong with icemakers and dispensers. Here, I'll explain how to troubleshoot and fix the most common things that go wrong.

]]>
Listen First
 • When you push your glass against the ice dispenser, do you hear anything?
 • There should be a rumbling sound from the auger inside the ice bin as it turns. If there’s a rumble and no ice, it means there’s ice stuck in the chute in the door that needs to be cleared out. (I’ll show you how to do this below.)
 • If you hear a hum and no rumble, that means the auger is stuck and can’t spin. Emptying the bin and reloading the ice should fix it.
 • If there’s no noise at all, it means the dispenser switch is broken and you should call in a pro to replace it.
 • If you can hear the auger turning, nothing’s clogging the chute but there’s still no ice, it’s time to check the water supply.

Who Makes My Appliances? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/who-makes-my-appliances/ Fri, 30 Sep 2022 15:45:20 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=481007 If you’re like most consumers, you rely on your appliances every day and rarely give them a second thought unless something goes wrong. According to the U.S. Energy Information Association, essentially all of American homes have refrigerators (99.5 percent), and almost as many have microwave ovens (96 percent).

Factor in cooking surfaces, dishwashers and small appliances like toasters and blenders, and it’s no wonder that it’s nearly impossible to go a day without interacting with an appliance in one way or another.

Have you ever wondered who makes all those appliances? With such a large number of appliance brands and manufacturers, it’s not an easy question to answer. While we can’t give a truly comprehensive list, we rounded up a good guide to get you started.

A Quick Note on Brands and Licenses

The question of who manufacturers a given appliance seems straightforward on the surface. But the industry is filled with mergers, acquisitions and geographically-split licensing agreements.

Case in point: Although founded in California, the modern company Hotpoint is best known as a British manufacturer of appliances like stoves and washer/dryers. Hotpoint appliances sold in the U.S., Canada and Central and Latin America are manufactured by the Haier Group (a Chinese company), while Hotpoint appliances sold in the U.K. and Europe are manufactured by Whirlpool (an American company).

Similarly, some brands span multiple appliances. So a branded stove might be manufactured by one company, while the same brand’s blender is manufactured by a different company. So it’s possible the maker of a specific sub-brand will vary by type, year or geography.

Let’s jump in and take a look at some of the most popular appliance brands.

Fhm Who Makes My Appliances?

Who Manufactures GE Appliances?

GE Appliances describes itself as a “House of Brands,” including Monogram, Café, GE and GE Profile. Interestingly, it also lists Haier and Hotpoint as branding lines, although they’re actually owned by Haier. (GE Appliances was originally part of General Electric, which sold it to the Haier Group in 2016.)

Haier Group is one of the world’s major appliance manufacturers. In the U.S., it largely operates under the GE Appliances banner due to better name recognition of the GE brand.

Under Haier, GE Appliances are primarily manufactured in the U.S. More than 250 appliances bear the “Made in America” mark, indicating 70 to 90 percent U.S.-based products. GE Appliances employs more than 13,000 workers across five cities in the U.S., including their massive Louisville, Kentucky facility.

Who Manufactures Kenmore Appliances?

Kenmore is a brand name for appliances sold at Sears locations, and now some online retailers. Kenmore doesn’t manufacture any appliances; it outsources to dozens of different contractors. The Kenmore brand was sold during the 2018 Sears bankruptcy, but it essentially still functions as it had before the sale.

The first three numbers of a Kenmore appliance’s model number indicate the manufacturer. These digits are often larger than the rest of the model number, making them easier to identify.

To decipher who makes what, consult a manufacturer code sheet. These have been passed around among DIYers and appliance repair shops for decades, and are now widely available online. The full list contains dozens of entries, but here are some of the most common:

 • Amana: 596;
 • Whirlpool: 106, 110, 198, 665;
 • GE: 363;
 • Frigidaire: 790.

The manufacturer lists circulated on the internet don’t always agree, so if you’re curious about a specific Kenmore appliance, consult more than one list.

Who Manufactures Jenn-Air, Maytag, Whirlpool, Amana, Roper and KitchenAid?

Michigan-based Whirlpool is a major American appliance manufacturer. Founded in 1908 with 15 employees, it has grown into a massive corporation with $22 billion in annual sales and more than 69,000 employees across 54 manufacturing centers.

With its lengthy history and more than 15 brands beneath the Whirlpool banner, it’s almost a certainty you’ve owned or seen many Whirlpool products in your lifetime.

Who Manufactures Frigidaire, Tappan, Kelvinator and Gibson?

The Swedish company Electrolux isn’t quite as large as Whirlpool (52,000 employees), but it’s a massive company with a huge impact on appliances.

In 2021 Electrolux had sales of $11.6 billion, representing “approximately 60 million products in 120 markets every year.” Their brands include refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, vacuums, air conditioners and small appliances.

Electrolux’s strongest seller in the U.S. is the Frigidaire brand. As of 2018, Electrolux held a 16 percent market share of major appliances in North America.

Who Manufactures My Garbage Disposal?

Garbage disposals are one of the few appliances where the manufacturing breakdown is fairly simple. Almost all disposals in the U.S. come from one of three manufacturers.

Whirlpool made a major play in the garbage disposal world in August 2022 when it announced an agreement to acquire InSinkErator from Emerson in a $3 billion cash deal. (The deal is expected to close by the end of 2022.)

InSinkErator was the first company to bring garbage disposals to the U.S. market, almost 100 years ago. Today it’s the largest manufacturer in North America with about 70 percent of the market. It features the InSinkErator, Badger and Evolution lines, along with KitchenAid and Whirlpool.

Moen is another major player, making Moen branded disposals as well as Frigidaire and Waste King. All are manufactured by Anaheim Manufacturing, which Moen owns.

The third-largest player is Joneca, which makes garbage disposals by brands such as WasteMaid, Red Goat, Bonecrusher, EcoLogic and Commodore. Its disposals are distributed through Anaheim Marketing, which is unrelated to Anaheim Manufacturing. Because even when the manufacturer seems straightforward, there’s always a name or licensing agreement to keep things interesting!

What To Do if Your Range Hood Isn’t Working https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/range-hood-repair/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/range-hood-repair/#respond Thu, 29 Sep 2022 16:37:13 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=482122 When they're working, range hoods make cooking much more pleasant. The light illuminates your cooking area and the exhaust fan pulls away airborne grease, steam and smoke.

In more than 30 years as an appliance technician, I've seen most everything that can go wrong with a range hood: squealing fans, burned-out lights, no power and fans that don't turn on. Here, I'll show you how to fix these four common range hood problems.

Here is a video on how to lubricate the fan bearings and how to change the lightbulbs.

Noisy fan
 • Remove range hood filter(s).

 • Listen carefully for which fan is making the noise. (Some range hoods have more than one fan.)
 • Go to your electrical service panel and turn off the breaker for the range hood. Ensure the power is off by trying the lights or the fan. If they don’t turn on, you’re good to go.
 • Remove any metal or plastic grille protecting the fan blades.
 • Spin the fan by hand. This can help to identify what’s causing the noise. Always wear protective gloves whether the blades are metal or another material; there could be sharp edges.
 • As you spin it, use a flashlight to see if the fan blade is rubbing against anything. If you see it rubbing, reach up beyond the fan and try pushing the motor with your hand slightly to the right or left. Try spinning the blade again to see if it sounds better.
 • If the fan squeals, the motor bearings probably need lubrication.
 • Remove the bottom metal plate from the range hood by loosening the perimeter Phillips-head screws. Here are a few simple steps to help you install a range hood.
 • Grab pliers and loosen the bolt that holds the fan blade to the motor shaft. Then pull off the fan blade.

 • Squirt spray lubricant where the shaft comes out of the fan motor.
 • Spin the motor shaft by hand to see if it sounds better. Add more spray lubricant if the squealing sound persists.

 • Reinstall the fan blade and tighten the retaining bolt.
 • Reinstall the range hood bottom plate.
 • Reinstall the protective fan grille.
 • Turn on the circuit breaker and test the fan.
