All you need is a tape measure, pencil, level, a pair of scissors, a package or two of white paper plates and a hot glue gun with some glue sticks at the ready. Do it right, and the texture and pattern created by the repurposed paper plates are quite elegant and striking. Here’s how to do it.

• Decide how much of your wall you want to accent, and how close to the floor you’d like the paper plate pattern to begin. Use your level, tape measure and pencil to mark a very light level line at this height (you can also begin the plates right at floor level).

Houzz’s report also shows bathroom renovators were opting for houseplants in their bathrooms for reasons such as odor-fighting, antibacterial attributes and air purification.

Shower benches and multiple shower heads make a shower feel more luxurious, while subdued bathroom lighting, including bathroom shower lights, can set the tone for relaxation.

Houzz noted spa-like elements, too, through an increase in bathroom plants, adding natural lighting solutions and choosing dimmable lighting. Completely covering the fall and shower walls with tile can also make the atmosphere soothing and luxurious, which is a bathroom tile trend that scores high, with 82% covering walls in ceramic or porcelain tiles. Although, some are arguing that bathroom tiles are on the way out and bathroom carpet is on its way back in.

In a stunning 2008 study from the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), seasonal light displays were discovered to account for 6.6 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity consumption each year. To put that in perspective, that is over 1 billion kWh more than the entire country of El Salvador uses in a year, or enough to power approximately 14 million refrigerators.

What’s the Average Cost of Lighting Christmas Lights?

Predictably, the cost of Christmas lights per household will vary according to several factors, including where the family resides, what type of lights they’re using, and how long they are keeping the lights on, according to HouseMethod.

HouseMethod first gathered data on each state’s average square footage and electricity rate. Then, they found the most popular Christmas decorations purchased from The Home Depot to use as a median sample. That sample included four sets of 13.25-foot-long icicle lights, two sets of 28.8-foot string lights and two 6-foot-tall inflatable yard decorations. HM calculated the total cost to power these lights for six hours a day, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, in each of the 50 states.

Why Does a Plant Create Water Droplets?

There are three main reasons you may spot water droplets on your plants. Learn about each of them to identify which may be causing your plant’s droplets.

Transpiration

This fancy term is used to describe a plant’s natural water exchange process. A plant sucks up water from its roots, and when it has received as much as it needs, it releases the excess water through its leaves. Think of it as a plant’s version of sweating.

Dew

Dew may cause water droplets on houseplant leaves in much the same way as it causes droplets on your lawn. When there is a temperature difference between the plant and its surrounding air, atmospheric moisture will condense on the warmer surface, the plant’s leaves.

Guttation

Guttation is a process by which plants release water, nutrients and minerals in the form of xylem sap. This sap is often mistaken for plain water and is most common in certain varieties of plants, such as succulents and fruit and vegetable plants.

Are Water Droplets a Problem?

Not necessarily. Dew droplets are fine, as are small quantities of transpiration droplets and natural guttation in affected plants. However, if you see more than a drop or two falling off the end of your plant’s leaves, this is likely a sign of overwatering and needs to be addressed.

What Are Other Symptoms of Overwatering?

To confirm that overwatering is the underlying issue, check for these other side effects:

• Wet and/or moldy soil
• Wilting and/or dropping leaves
• Mushy or unstable stems
• Yellow leaves and/or brown spots

If any of these symptoms resonate with you, it’s time to reevaluate your watering schedule.

How Do I Fix a Waterlogged Plant?

In most cases, the solution is to stop watering until the soil is completely dry throughout, usually a few weeks. To ensure the soil is appropriately dry, dig a finger in deep, or use a wooden chopstick or moisture meter. Be sure to check multiple places in the pot for a holistic picture.

However, if your plant exhibits all signs outlined above, it’s best to repot it, trimming off any rotten roots, which will appear black and mushy.

How Do I Properly Water My Plant Going Forward?

The key to giving your plant the right amount of water is to consistently check the soil. If it is completely dry throughout, as explained above, water the plant until it drains freely from the bottom of the pot. The pot should feel heavy and the soil should look moist, but there shouldn’t be any standing water at the surface. If the soil is not yet dry throughout, wait a few days and then check again.

Am I Doing This Right?

Good plant parenting is all about getting to know your individual plants and listening to their natural rhythms. Always trust the plant itself over your calendar notifications for watering, and you’ll do just fine. And if after all this you’ve decided you’re not a green thumb after all, don’t underestimate the aesthetic appeal of a good artificial plant.

Branches should be 12 to 24 inches long. Select branches with different textures and shades of green or blue. You can also save money by snipping a few branches from plants in your landscape. Branches from juniper, yew, dogwood shrub, evergreen or winterberry holly, and evergreen trees (pine, hemlock, fir and arborvitae) are all good choices. Be selective when snipping branches. You are not pruning the shrub. Don’t take more than three or four branches from each plant. Snip from locations where nearby branches will naturally hide the missing ones.

How to Make a Giant Popcorn Garland

Ready to begin creating your very own giant popcorn garland?

Materials and Tools:

• Plastic drop cloth
• Protective gear, including gloves and eyewear
• Waterpoof, closed-cell spray foam—@jeffmackay recommends using Loctite Tite Foam to avoid discoloration.
• Plastic straws
• Scissors
• Red shatterproof plastic ornaments
• Hot glue gun
• Twine or fishing line

Directions

1. First, set up your popcorn-making station by covering a workspace with a plastic drop cloth. This will prevent your DIY decoration from sticking. Be sure that it’s a large enough area to prevent any potential spray foam spatter from touching other surfaces. We recommend moving your work outdoors, if possible, for extra ventilation. Our biggest tip for working with spray foam is to wear disposable gloves, protective eyewear and proper work clothes. While acetone can work in a pinch to dissolve uncured foam, cured foam is extremely tricky to get off of unwanted surfaces.
2. To form the oversized “popcorn” use spray foam to create cloud-like clusters around the center of each straw. Spray in loose, random motions. The fluffier, the better. You should be able to create one eight-foot strand per bottle of spray foam. Let dry according to the manufacturer’s directions, usually for about 8-24 hours.
3. Once the foam popcorn pieces are cured, grab each piece of “popcorn” and snip the excess straws on each side so they are not sticking out. Try to snip it as close to the spray foam as you can to get a genuine popcorn look. Repeat this step until all of your popcorn pieces are trimmed.
4. Next, create a small hole in each ornament by slowly pressing a hot glue gun tip to melt through the plastic at the opposite side of the cap. Depending on how hot your glue gun is, this may take a few minutes for each, so patience is key. These ornaments will serve as your “cranberries” in this larger-than-life twist on a holiday classic.
5. Last, remove the ornament cap and pull the twine or fishing line through the ornament. Alternate threading the popcorn by pulling the string through the straw hole and the red “cranberry” ornaments to create your own design. Ta-da! You’ve created your own giant popcorn garland.

Once you’ve successfully made your own giant popcorn garland decoration, it’s time to hang it for you (and your neighbors) to admire. Hang a strand along a porch fence to add festive flair or drape it around your exterior door to give your home a fun, gingerbread house vibe.
