Light, color, flooring and furniture all make certain impressions in the mind, and those skilled at home decor understand how to use each to create a desired effect. To this toolbox, the accent wall is a worthy addition.

An accent wall is any wall in a room that’s colored or patterned differently from the rest to create visual impact. Accent walls break up what might otherwise be a visually monotonous space. They also draw attention to a certain area or feature of the room. Some accent walls are simple, featuring nothing more than a color change. Others, like dynamic accent walls, are intricate and complex, with tile, stone, woodwork or other materials situated to create texture and draw the eyes and attention of visitors. These sorts of accent walls are often stunning, but require lots of time, money and skill to install. That’s where much simpler approaches to accent walls, like the one we’re about to show you, can help.

How to Create an Accent Wall with Paper Plates

@nittas_homeandstyle 3D accent wall with paper plates 🤩🤩 #fyp #walldesign #walldecor #3dwallart #3dwall #dollartreefinds #viral ♬ CAP – Burrell

We discovered this hack on TikTok that shows what may be the simplest, most cost-effective method of creating a 3-dimensional accent wall around—the paper plate accent wall. All you need is a tape measure, pencil, level, a pair of scissors, a package or two of white paper plates and a hot glue gun with some glue sticks at the ready. Do it right, and the texture and pattern created by the repurposed paper plates are quite elegant and striking. Here’s how to do it.

 • Decide how much of your wall you want to accent, and how close to the floor you’d like the paper plate pattern to begin. Use your level, tape measure and pencil to mark a very light level line at this height (you can also begin the plates right at floor level).
 • Squeeze a little hot melt glue onto the rim of each plate, then stick them to your wall one at a time, using your level line (or floor) as a guide.
 • Fasten another plate right next to the first. Continue working your way across the wall, then add more rows, each directly above the previous one.
 • Once you’ve covered your accent wall with a single layer of plates, add a second layer on top. Arrange each row of the second layer to evenly cover the seams between plates in the first layer, giving the wall an elegant, patterned appearance.
 • Cut plates with scissors as needed to work around windows, doors, hanging pictures and other obstacles.

If you’d prefer not to mount plates directly to your wall with hot melt glue, try this version of the hack instead. It involves creating a mounting surface for the plates with sheets of white Bristol board taped together. Use as many sheets as you like to create the ideal-sized accent wall for your space, then mount the plate-clad backing to your wall with double-sided tape or sticky tack. You’ll still be using something sticky on your wall, but not nearly as much as with the direct plate-to-wall method.

How to Elevate Your Paper Plate Accent Wall

White paper plates are all well and good, but what if you want an accent wall with a splash of just the right color or colors? That’s where this color sensor comes in. Paired with an app on your phone, it gives an exact readout of any color, along with the specific paints you need to buy and mix to create that color. Not only that, but it also calculates mathematically complimentary colors to any color you scan. Want to match your paper plates to an existing wall color, but don’t know what paint was originally used? This device can help. Want the plates on your accent wall to be a different but complimentary color to the rest of the room? The device removes all guesswork. I have one myself and use it regularly for interior painting work. It’ll take your paper plate accent wall to the next level.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bedroom-paint-colors-to-avoid/ Mon, 06 Mar 2023 19:33:06 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=521882 Your bedroom is your personal sanctuary, which is why it’s so important you select bedroom paint colors that help make it feel grounding, calm and authentic to you. Of course, that means choosing shades that feel right to you, but remember that some colors aren’t really suited for painting a bedroom.

Instead of using those shades, you can select bedroom paint colors that will help you establish the energy you seek. Nevertheless, with so many different colors, we understand how confusing it can be to select the right one. That’s why we’re here to help you learn more about the bedroom paint colors to avoid and which to pick. Whether completing a whole bedroom remodel or just repainting your walls, knowing the colors to avoid will set you on the right track.

These Are the Bedroom Paint Colors You Should Avoid

Stressed woman sits in bedroom renovation with paint mess around her in the floor

According to popular TikTok designer and interior architect Phoenix Grey (@mrphoenixgrey), certain hues aren’t the best choice for your bedroom because they won’t help you establish the vibe you want. Let’s dive right into the bedroom paint colors you should avoid.

@mrphoenixgrey Colour has so my energy, so keep that in mind as it reflects in your space #colour #bedroomcolor #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ ShowTime – Hip Hop Instrumental

 • Red: Because red is so high-contrast, it adds a lot of energy to your room that isn’t conducive to creating a calming bedroom. But don’t toss out your red paint yet—if you love this color, you can still add pops in other spaces in your home, such as your bathroom or dining room. Or, if you’re committed to painting your bedroom red, Grey suggests you select a moodier, darker hue.

 • Yellow: There are many places in your home where yellow paint would shine, but it isn’t ideal for painting your bedroom. Much like red, it’s high energy and doesn’t add a mellow vibe to your room. Grey mentions that this energizing color is ideal for starting your day, but you may struggle to fall asleep in a yellow bedroom.

 • Green: While we love how green brings the outdoors inside, too much in a bedroom is, well, too much. This is especially the case, Grey warns, for light greens. If you must have green in your bedroom, go for a gem-toned shade, so you don’t sacrifice coziness—or skip it altogether.

These Are the Bedroom Colors You Should Go For

Now that you know which bedroom paint colors to avoid, let’s discuss which colors Grey believes are a better alternative. And if you really want to give your space a facelift, you can implement some of these bedroom design upgrades in addition to a fresh coat of paint.

@mrphoenixgrey Replying to @DittaStone these are my go to’s for creating a really cozy environment in the bedroom #bedroomdesign #painthack #interiordesign #homehacks #designertips #toronto #designhack #homeimprovement ♬ Luxury fashion (no vocals) – TimTaj

 • Pink: No, not bubblegum pink! Muted shades are your best friend when picking this color. One reason Grey loves pink in a bedroom is that it pairs beautifully with many different colors, plus you can easily add a visually appealing contrast.

 • Terracotta: If you want to evoke feelings of warmth and coziness with your bedroom paint colors, terracotta is the way to go. It’s basically neutral, so you have a lot of flexibility when working with this paint. Plus, it adds a sunny vibe to your room without being too overwhelming.

 • Black: If dark and moody is your vibe, look no further than black paint for your bedroom walls. While Grey warns that black bedroom paint is difficult to do right, if you succeed, you’ll have a unique sanctuary that allows you to rest and recharge. To do so, be sure to bring in other warm tones that create an intimate vibe. And don’t forget to select black paint with warm undertones for the best result.

Now that you’ve selected your bedroom paint colors, you can start getting innovative with your bedroom furniture to create a truly one-of-a-kind space that reflects you.

Art Deco Is Making a Comeback—Here’s How to Embrace the Style in Your Home https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/art-deco-style/ Fri, 24 Feb 2023 23:21:53 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=517671 Who said the 2020s couldn’t be just as roaring as the 1920s? A century after it initially emerged, the art deco style is becoming popular again, and your opportunity to infuse your home with a healthy dose of glamor has arrived.

But how do you add pops of art deco style into your living spaces while making it your own? As with all interior design trends, it’s possible to maintain your unique flair while incorporating hints of this beloved style.

What Is Art Deco?

If you marvel at the design in The Great Gatsby, art deco style is your speed. Art deco style, in many ways, reflected the gaudy opulence of the roaring ’20s. It was a clear departure from the Art Nouveau style which preceded it.

This trendy design style impacted all facets of society—from interior design to architecture and beyond. Art deco gained momentum in the 1920s and was a persistently popular home design style throughout the Depression of the ’30s and even the ’40s. Eventually, society’s celebration of the art deco style ended when mid-century modern decor emerged in the 1950s.

If you want to learn more about the decor trends which dominated each decade, we’ve got you covered.

Common Motifs in Art Deco

Now that you’re familiar with the definition of art deco style, let’s touch on some common motifs you should watch for.

Geometric Shapes

The first is geometric shapes and patterns. This period incorporates many harsh, sleek lines into its design. As a result, you won’t see many fluid or soft shapes, as structure reigns supreme.

Think of it this way: some of the world’s most famous skyscrapers, such as the Empire State Building and Chrysler Builder, are products of this era. You can thank technological advances for the period’s celebration of angular design. Keep an eye out for chevrons, trapezoids, triangles, zigzags or fans with harsh lines when sourcing your art deco home items.

Sunbursts

Another art deco motif is the sunburst. You can easily find a sunburst-shaped mirror to add above your fireplace to bring this period into your home, or a tile for your floor that uses the motif.

Curved Patterns

While this style is mainly structured, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some curves. However, choose sweeping curves to stay true to the period. Stepped forms are another popular motif you’ll see in art deco style. We recommend giving it a try with this stunning art deco peel-and-stick wallpaper.

A Pinch of Fun

Lastly, don’t be afraid to have some fun with your space—the designers of the art deco era certainly did. They often infused Egyptian-inspired touches into their homes. It was also common to see glimmers of animal print, a la safari.

How to Make Every Part of Your Space Art Deco

Ready to begin infusing every facet of your home with art deco style? Here’s your guide on how to do it, from flooring and furniture to fabric and beyond.

Colors

The colors of the art deco era helped bring this illustrious style to life. Rich, luxurious colors were all the rage, so bring some glamor into your home by leaning into bold hues. Try shades of blue, green, red, yellow or pink. Of course, too many deep colors in your home can be overwhelming—so don’t be afraid to lighten things up with beige or cream-colored paint. These were popular in high-traffic living spaces such as living and dining rooms.

One thing to remember about color in the art deco style is that thoughtful touches of chrome, silver or black balance it. And, of course, you can keep your space neutral and still celebrate this style—in fact, neutrals pair beautifully with the wood characteristic of this era.

Furniture

Let’s dive into the furniture styles you might choose to add art deco pizzazz to your home. Of course, the most defining characteristic of furniture from this era is its super-size. And if you’re looking to bring it into your bedroom, consider an armoire.

When sourcing furniture, make sure you opt for sleek silhouettes. Designers of this era saved the details for other aspects of the living space—furniture shouldn’t be exceptionally intricate. If you want to add visual interest, you can choose tortoiseshell or mother-of-pearl inlay pieces, as they were beloved in this period.

Textures & Fabrics

As far as art deco style fabrics go, lean into leather and velvet. Then, consider a pop of zebra print if you want to add a wild touch to your home. Art deco style uses geometric patterns, so you can also source fabrics that incorporate that. Consider color blocking or keep it simple with a solid fabric in one of the era’s buzziest hues.

As for textures, don’t be afraid to experiment with mirrors, chrome and other shiny materials. This era is all about opulence and glamor, so keep that in mind. You can also use those geometric patterns we keep mentioning to infuse texture and add dimension to a space.

Floors

Up next, we have flooring. Embrace patterns to bring your floor up to par with art deco style standards. Herringbone floors were typical of the time, and so were starburst designs.

This style is all about geometric shapes and symmetry, so you’ll also see that in tile or linoleum flooring that features checkers. Some flooring even visually engages viewers by leaning into kaleidoscopic shapes.

Don’t shy away from mixing and matching patterns—many designers in this period placed rugs with bold, structured patterns on top of the already busy floors.

Lighting

To embrace art deco style with your lighting fixtures, seek out glamorous selections that feature a geometric pattern. Opal glass was a popular material during this era in the 1920s, so you might want to use a light fixture made from it.

Additionally, sleek lighting with clean lines is an excellent choice. Take a cue from this period’s love of skyscrapers and select a shade featuring chrome or glass with skyscraper-inspired shapes etched.

How to Perfectly Space Your Curtains Using Toilet Paper Rolls https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/how-to-space-curtains/ Sat, 18 Feb 2023 00:05:55 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=517686 Curtains can level up any room in your house. From modern linen panels in the living room to bedroom blackout curtains necessary for getting good rest in the summer, curtains serve for both function and decor. Aesthetically, if you live in a smaller space like an apartment or a tiny home, adding curtains can make the room look bigger.

When it comes to buying the perfect curtains for your home, you’ll have plenty of options in color, style, material and price. As great as curtains are, they pose a challenge for perfectionists. Perfectly spacing panel curtains can feel like an impossible task, made especially challenging since the curtain bar is not exactly at eye level. Sure, you could use the broom handle or find the yardstick to help, but we have some easier ways to solve the issue of how to space curtains.

How to Space Your Curtains with Toilet Paper Rolls

@littlepettittpad ✌️ Curtain Spacing Hack have you tried this 🙌 #homehacks #homestylinghacks #curtainshack #homedecorideasuk #homedecortrends #homedecortrends2023 ♬ Cool Kids (our sped up version) – Echosmith

TikTok user @littlepettittpad shared an easy and nearly free hack about how to space curtains with toilet paper rolls. Here’s how to replicate the hack at home.

 • Remove the curtain rod and curtains
 • Alternate sliding one curtain grommet onto the curtain rod followed by one toilet paper roll. Be sure the toilet paper roll is placed on the back side of the curtain that’ll face the window.
 • Repeat on the other side
 • Rehang the curtain rod

It’s as simple as that. Best of all, toilet paper rolls are something every household has around.

Other Ways to Space Your Curtains

If you’re not in the mood to wait for enough toilet paper rolls to accumulate before attempting this method, here are some alternatives for how to space curtains.

Use Plastic Pipe

Instead of using toilet paper rolls, you can achieve the same effect by using plastic or PVC piping. Your local hardware store can likely cut it into your desired size—just be sure to choose piping wide enough that it’ll slide onto the curtain rod. Using plastic pipes could even last longer than toilet paper rolls since they’re more durable. Although, you’ll have to invest in some piping rather than reusing something already at home unless you happen to have some lying around.

Use Other Household Cardboard Rolls

In addition to toilet paper, a few other household items come with cardboard rolls in the core. Saving all of them can be a quicker method instead of using just toilet paper rolls. Wrapping paper rolls, lint rollers and paper towel rolls could easily be used instead of or in addition to toilet paper rolls. Just be sure to cut each of them to equal lengths to get evenly spaced curtains.

Use a Foam Pool Noodle or Foam Pipe Covers

A pool noodle or foam pipe cover could also do the trick of getting evenly spaced grommets. For this method, you’ll want to use a pool noodle with a hollow center or head to your local hardware store for some foam pipe covers. Cut the foam to your desired width and slide it between the curtain grommets just like you would if you were using toilet paper rolls.

Is Bathroom Carpet Making a Comeback?! https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bathroom-carpet/ Wed, 15 Feb 2023 20:22:30 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=516653 Tour a house that was built in the 1960s or ’70s, and you might be in for a surprise. If the bathroom hasn’t seen the renovation hammer, the bathroom floor might be carpeted in shaggy, plush luxury.

Some of us immediately cringe when we think of bathroom carpet, but at one point, it was the hot bathroom trend. If we ignore the mold and other hygiene issues, stepping onto carpet instead of freezing bathroom tile on a cold winter morning sounds pretty appealing. Like many bathroom decor trends, we’ve seen carpeted bathrooms come and go, replaced by modern tiles that are easier to clean. But the lifecycle of almost every trend sees an eventual rebirth. Are we in the midst of a carpeted bathroom becoming popular again?

The History of Bathroom Carpet

Carpeting American homes took off post-World War II when suburban neighborhoods cropped up across the country. While homes became larger, real estate listings started including the sought-after “wall-to-wall-carpeting.” Americans were hooked on the comfortable flooring of shag carpet. Some homes even literally carpeted the walls. For a time, having a home with carpet was seen as an affluent, in-vogue choice. In 1968 Jane Fonda traveled to space in a shag-carpeted spaceship in “Barbarella.” Up through the 1980s, it seems like carpeting your home was an integral part of the deal. A New York Times article that ran in 1979 mentioned that carpet sales were increasing year-on-year, and with the price of new homes surging, they expected more families to renovate their current homes by adding in carpet. The trend of covering a home’s floor with carpet didn’t exclude carpeting the bathroom.

Plenty of homes still have carpeted rooms today, but many have moved on to favoring tiles, hardwood floors or vinyl flooring. Keeping carpet clean is often a harder task than sweeping and mopping non-fabric flooring options. It’s harder to spot a carpeted bathroom in a modern home, but recently we’ve seen some a-list celebrities stir some controversy while displaying their carpeted bathrooms. Demi Moore has carpet in her bathroom at her home in Sun Valley, Idaho. David Harbor and Lily Allen have a carpeted bathroom in their Brooklyn townhouse that doubles as a seating area.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Demi Moore (@demimoore)

So, Is Bathroom Carpet Making a Comeback?

You’re not alone if you think carpeting a bathroom isn’t the best choice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention mentions using carpet in rooms that are prone to get wet like bathrooms and basements can spell trouble with mold.

Carpeting a bathroom has some appealing aspects like providing a non-slip surface when getting out of the shower. Aesthetically, some prefer the look of carpet in the bathroom, and some interior designers are reincorporating it into modern homes, but they’re doing so cautiously. Some are carpeting a portion of the bathroom and avoiding areas that are likely to get damp like near the sink.

We’re convinced carpet in the bathroom falls into the bucket of bathroom trends on the way out more so than making a comeback. But if you do decide it’s right for your bathroom, choose a carpet that’s made of synthetic fibers that are easy to clean like nylon.

People Are Filling Their Fireplaces with Candles and It’s So Cozy https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/candles-in-the-fireplace/ Fri, 10 Feb 2023 23:08:27 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=514290 Non-working fireplace? No problem! If you have a fireplace that you don’t use, this tip is for you. Maybe your fireplace doesn’t function, you rent and can’t use it or you even have concerns about the potential health impacts of inhaling smoke. Regardless of why your fireplace isn’t functional, you may have given up on the idea of it being anything more than a piece of decor.

But we have some great news: with the help of this handy hack, you can quickly elevate your living space by adding an extra dose of coziness. Yes, we’re talking about placing candles in the fireplace. Here’s how—and why— you should give it a go in your home.

You can also elevate your room by investing in some fireplace decor ideas.

How to Prep Your Fireplace for Candles

@mydiyhappyhome_ Fireplace GLOW UP 🕯 We’ve never used our gas log fireplace- for safety reasons with our kiddos, but have always wanted it to feel cozy. It took me about an hour of time and I love it!!! I removed the gas logs (saving for later), left the grate in place to protect the gas line, cut a of thick piece of cardboard to fit in the grate, sprayed it black and added battery operated candles. Now we can have a warm, cozy glow- year round. No hot flames to worry with… and we can always swap it back later on down the road if we want to! 😉 You can create spaces in your home that love! I will link up the candles I used on my LTK page- link in my profile. https://liketk.it/3TB5k #fireplace #fireplacemakeover #diyhomedecor #diymom #momlife #cozyhome #candlelight ♬ Made to Shine – Shelly Fairchild & Silverberg

Before putting candles in the fireplace, you need to prep the area. As seen in this video by TikToker @mydiyhappyhome, start your fireplace facelift by removing anything already in it, such as gas logs. (Another foolproof way to give your fireplace a facelift? By adding fireplace tiles.) Of course, be cautious and make sure nothing is hot before you touch it. Because this creator has a gas line in the fireplace, she left the grates. That brings us to our next must-know before placing candles in the fireplace: if you also have a gas line, only use faux candles.

Next, use a vacuum to clean up any excess debris, which tidies up the area and makes it more visually pleasing. You can also a piece of black-painted cardboard and put it on top of the grate so the candles can sit. Once you’ve completed these steps, you’re ready for assembly.

How to Set Up Your Candles in the Fireplace

Now that you’ve prepped your space, it’s time to start arranging your candles in the fireplace. Before you begin, ask yourself a few questions. Do you prefer taper candles or the look of pillar ones? Would you like candles of varied heights or all the same? Do colored candles appeal to you, or do you want to keep them classic with a neutral hue? Do you have a gas line? If so, you’ll have to stick with faux candles. And if you go with fake candles, will you get a remote-control set to illuminate your space easily?

Once you’ve answered these questions and made your purchase, you’re officially ready to begin putting your candles in the fireplace.

With Candlesticks

If you love the elegant, whimsical look of taper candles, you can use candlesticks to arrange your candles in the fireplace. Check out how TikTok user @danniellajoy sets hers to create an intimate, cozy vibe in her home. Of course, you can opt for plain taper candles, but we love how this creator added a fun twist with the ones she selected. To get the look, our editors recommend these flameless wax candles that mimic the real deal.

With Candles of Varied Sizes and Heights

As seen in the first video, using candles of varied heights creates visual interest and makes the entire arrangement more appealing. Plus, it adds a feeling of coziness and warmth like no other, as you can use candles of different sizes to fill in the gaps. Try these flickering LED candles that come in an assortment of sizes.

With Colorful Candles

You can select colorful candles if you want to add color to your space. Whether you prefer taper or pillar candles, you can certainly find them in many lively colors, so don’t be afraid to get creative to make an arrangement that feels like a reflection of your home’s unique style. Check out how TikToker @hollyauna did it for some inspiration.

What Is Warm Minimalism? Everything to Know About This Trend https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/warm-minimalism/ Wed, 08 Feb 2023 19:20:14 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=513229 Minimalist design can get a bad rap for being cold or clinical, but warm minimalism is here to shake things up and reveal just how cozy intentional design can be. If you find simple yet intimate spaces to be inviting, warm minimalism will likely appeal to your taste.

But figuring out how to balance minimalist best practices with the more laid-back, intimate touches of warm minimalism can be tricky. Luckily, you don’t have to navigate it alone, as we’re here to walk you through everything you need to know about warm minimalism, its key features, and how to bring it to life in your space.

What Is Warm Minimalism?

Warm minimalism borrows principles from traditional minimalist design but adds an element of softness and warmth. With warm minimalism, you can embrace earthy hues, inviting textures and intimate touches that add character to the space.

There is some overlap between warm minimalism and traditional minimalist design, however. For instance, there is still an emphasis on intentional design and doing more with less. With warm minimalism, you are invited to layer textures, add cozy touches and give your space a lived-in feel. Think of Japandi style as an example of warm minimalism in practice.

What Are Some Features of Warm Minimalism?

warm interior design living room space

For those who aren’t ready to go full maximalist but still enjoy a warm look, warm minimalism could strike that ideal balance. Simple yet inviting, this design style features neutrals with welcoming, warm undertones, mix-and-match natural textures and eclectic intimate touches that make your space uniquely yours.

Another key principle of warm minimalism is that you are mindful of the items you place in your space. Still, there isn’t as much emphasis on scarcity as traditional minimalism.

How Do You Make Minimalism Warm?

To get started making minimalism warm in your home, you first need the right shade of paint. The hue you choose sets the tone for your space, so opt for a beige, white or taupe with warm undertones. And with warm minimalism, you don’t need to shy away from color—terra cotta, for example, pairs beautifully with this design style.

Next, it’s time to bring texture into your living space. To do this, lean into organic, natural textures such as wood, leather or rattan. Remember: whatever texture you add to your space should have a cozy undertone, so steer clear from anything too harsh. For instance, start by adding a headboard that brings an inviting quality into your minimalist bedroom, such as rattan. Then, mix and match other textures, such as linen bedding, chunky yarn knit blankets and warm neutral pillows.

Lastly, warm minimalism asks you to add personal, cozy touches to your living space. Add a terra cotta vase or a ceramic picture frame to your bedside table. Warm minimalism is just as intentional as traditional minimalist style, but the personal items you add make it mellow and homey.

Doughnut Lamps May Be 2023’s Next Big Decor Trend https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/doughnut-lamps/ Wed, 01 Feb 2023 20:37:28 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=510668 Lighting trends are ever-evolving to our modern tastes. So while 2022 saw people flocking to lamps shaped like mushrooms, oversized statement lamps and some natural, eco-friendly options, 2023 is lighting the way with something a bit different. The latest trending home item is another sculptural look that demands attention.

This time, instead of fungi-inspired lamps, you’ll soon be seeing doughnut lamps—and yes, they are shaped like the sweet pastries. Doughnut lamps, also known as donut lamps, bring an unexpected look to rooms and can fit many decor aesthetics from mid-century modern to industrial and anywhere in-between.

What Is a Doughnut Lamp?

Varmblixt Led Wall Table Lamp Ledge

Doughnut lamps are sculptural lamps shaped like a circle with a hole in the center. In structure, they resemble the breakfast item, which is why they’ve received the nickname “doughnut lamp.” The lamp style combines a modern sensibility with a retro vibe and shape, so they fit perfectly in a mid-century modern room, gallery or eclectic space that combines several influences to create a cohesive design.

Depending on the iteration, doughnut lamps may feature a modern or earthy color and texture such as with a white ceramic or stoneware base, or a modern vintage look with orange glass. When lit, doughnut lamps might cast a dreamy, cozy glow, as with the case of the glass version from IKEA, or a nice, bright table-side light.

These stand-out pieces should fit just about any modern aesthetic, but if you aren’t sold on doughnut-shaped lighting, take a look at these modern table lamps for a wider range of options.

Where Can I Get a Doughnut Lamp?

The doughnut lamp leading the trend is none other than IKEA’s VARMBLIXT LED Table and Wall Lamp ($50). The VARMBLIXT lamp features a round body with an orange glass shade shaped like a doughnut. Designed by Sabine Marcelis in partnership with IKEA, the VARMBLIXT features a mounting system that makes it possible to put it on the wall, but you can also use it as a table lamp. The interesting design is also quite utilitarian—it comes with an energy-saving LED light source, so there’s no need to change the lightbulb. If you want to get your hands on the IKEA doughnut lamp, the entire VARMBLIXT collection will roll out in stores nationwide starting February 2023. You’ll also be able to order the doughnut lamp online through IKEA’s website.

Other doughnut lamps are available from online stores like Amazon and Wayfair, or small stores through Etsy, though their designs vary. For instance, this sculptural doughnut wicker pendant lamp ($195) will bring a retro vibe to your space. However, lamps built like the one from the VARMBLIXT are few and far between—IKEA may have started a new trend!

For those who like the mushroom and doughnut trend and can’t decide on just one, there’s a funky orange lamp from Lumens ($320) that looks like a mushroom sprouting a doughnut top—the perfect unexpected combo. You can also get a similar white mushroom-doughnut lamp from Etsy for $168.

The Top Bathroom Decor Trends of 2023 https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/bathroom-decor-trends/ Mon, 23 Jan 2023 21:42:49 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=507428 Your bathroom is a special space. When you think about it, you spend a good portion of your life in your bathroom, whether that’s getting ready for your day, showering or taking a leisurely bath. It needs both form and function, and the decor matters, too!

Because your bathroom’s decor can make or break the tranquility of the space, you may want to refresh your bathroom. An update can solve space issues or bring some needed calm to your day-to-day, and one of the best ways to get some inspiration is to look at the top bathroom decor trends for 2023.

The Bathroom Decor Trends We’ll Be Seeing in 2023

Whatever your style, having a comfortable bathroom is a trend that everyone can appreciate, and comfort is one of the increasingly popular reasons to renovate your bathroom. The top bathroom decor trends leading the way in 2023 include modern aesthetics with clean lines and eco-friendly, sustainable materials. Some surprising trends are also increasing across modern bathroom decor—space-saving moves like removing giant bathtubs are also on the rise.

In a time when customization options abound, your bathroom’s aesthetics can take on a unique personality, just like the rest of your home.

Skip the Oversized Bathtubs

Empty Luxury Bathroom

Among the bathroom trends on the way out, large, standalone tubs are becoming a thing of the past for many people. By removing an unused tub, you can reclaim that space for something more useful, such as a larger shower or more storage. Maybe putting in a huge tub was a bona fide bathroom design fail, leaving little room to navigate the space. Some people may prefer to keep the reclaimed space for a more spacious bathroom layout as opposed to a cramped one.

Larger, Insta-Worthy Showers

People are putting more energy and money into redesigning their shower spaces. According to the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s (NKBA) 2023 Design Trends report and Houzz’s 2022 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study, there’s been a continual increase in consumer upgrades for showers. These upgrades span the whole spectrum from adding shower seats to luxury or multiple shower heads and expanding a shower’s size. The NKBA notes that two-person showers are especially popular.

Sustainable Materials and Elements

As people strive to lessen their carbon footprint, sustainability is an important detail a lot of homeowners are now not willing to overlook when updating their bathrooms. Upgrades such as tankless, energy-efficient water heaters and automatic bath ventilation showed up as major spending areas in the Houzz report, which surveyed 2,570 people in varying stages of the bathroom remodeling phase. Per the report, “nearly three in five homeowners add ventilation fans” when upgrading bathroom systems. That’s 59% of people who upgrade their bathroom!

Eco-friendly homeowners invested in Energy Star appliances, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification for cabinetry, LED lighting and paints free of volatile organic compounds (VOC-free).

Houzz’s report also shows bathroom renovators were opting for houseplants in their bathrooms for reasons such as odor-fighting, antibacterial attributes and air purification.

Your Bathroom, Your Spa

A major takeaway trend from NKBA’s 2023 Design Trends Report is a spa vibe. People want to feel relaxed in their bathrooms, and what’s more relaxing than heading to your own personal spa? Despite the increase of large showers over large bathtubs, a spa atmosphere is achievable through whatever your personal aesthetic is. Shower benches and multiple shower heads make a shower feel more luxurious, while subdued bathroom lighting, including bathroom shower lights, can set the tone for relaxation.

Houzz noted spa-like elements, too, through an increase in bathroom plants, adding natural lighting solutions and choosing dimmable lighting. Completely covering the fall and shower walls with tile can also make the atmosphere soothing and luxurious, which is a bathroom tile trend that scores high, with 82% covering walls in ceramic or porcelain tiles. Although, some are arguing that bathroom tiles are on the way out and bathroom carpet is on its way back in.

Accents Galore!

Injecting some personality into an en suite bathroom is on the rise. Fun pops of color will likely abound, as well as interesting patterns and textures.

These accents could show up in your chosen lighting, paint color, cabinets, or towels. Other on-trend decor items that’ll accent your bathroom includes irregular mirrors, textured tiles and colorful cabinets, all trends hitting the internet lately.

If you’re on a budget for your bathroom redesign, check out these cheap bathroom updates that really make an impact.

How Much Extra Do Your Christmas Lights Cost You On Your Electric Bill? https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/christmas-lights-electric-bill/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 15:44:30 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=500387 In America, Christmas light displays are a staple of the season. According to a 2020 poll from Yahoo, 42% of Americans decorate their home exteriors each year. By far, the most common outdoor Christmas decorations are light displays, whether that’s a simple strand or an elaborate kaleidoscope of rainbow bulbs.

But the festive decorations come at a cost, and many holiday enthusiasts may be dreading their January electric bill. Read on to learn, on average, how much you can expect to pay for running your Christmas lights.

How Much Electricity Is Used for Christmas?

In a stunning 2008 study from the United States Energy Information Administration (EIA), seasonal light displays were discovered to account for 6.6 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity consumption each year. To put that in perspective, that is over 1 billion kWh more than the entire country of El Salvador uses in a year, or enough to power approximately 14 million refrigerators.

What’s the Average Cost of Lighting Christmas Lights?

Predictably, the cost of Christmas lights per household will vary according to several factors, including where the family resides, what type of lights they’re using, and how long they are keeping the lights on, according to HouseMethod.

HouseMethod first gathered data on each state’s average square footage and electricity rate. Then, they found the most popular Christmas decorations purchased from The Home Depot to use as a median sample. That sample included four sets of 13.25-foot-long icicle lights, two sets of 28.8-foot string lights and two 6-foot-tall inflatable yard decorations. HM calculated the total cost to power these lights for six hours a day, from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, in each of the 50 states.

Costs ranged from $10.51 in Washington state to $38.46 in Hawaii, with an expected average of $16.48. To find your specific state, check the interactive map here.

How to Save Money Powering Your Christmas Lights

Now that you know what costs to expect this Christmas, it’s worth learning a few key ways to save money for future Christmases. Pay attention to these four tricks:

Use LED Lights

It’s no secret: LED lights are the most cost-effective. In 2017, the Washington Post determined that running one strand of LED lights costs just 1.4% of the price to run a similar string of incandescent bulbs. Yes, they are more expensive at the initial purchase, but the electric savings handily make up for the downpayment.

Store Lights Properly

Safe, clean storage leads to fewer broken bulbs. In turn, fewer broken bulbs mean that you can keep your lights for longer and bypass the need to buy more strands each year.

Set Timers with Smart Lights

Smart lights conveniently allow you to set them on a timer. This handy feature helps you eliminate extra charges, as you’ll never forget to turn off your lights.

Fix Fuses to Get More Use Out of Your Lights

Those tangled lights at the bottom of the box may still have more life in them yet. Before you throw them away, try repairing the fuses yourself to avoid the cost of replacing the strand.

Other Thrifty Tips

No matter where you’re celebrating Christmas this year, we hope these tips help eliminate some of the financial stress of the season. To save more money on decorations, try finding fun pieces at your local dollar store or making them yourself. After all, no handyman holiday is complete without a festive DIY!

If Your Indoor Plant Has Water Droplets On Its Leaves, This Is What It Means https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/water-drop-on-leaf/ Thu, 22 Dec 2022 15:03:44 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=490945 All plant parents, whether seasoned or amateur, recognize that plants speak their own language. Their color, positioning and leaf texture all carry specific messages. And learning to respond to these messages can help you save a houseplant on the brink.

Recently, aspiring green thumbs have been asking about one particular symptom: water droplets on the leaves of their indoor plants. Don’t worry—your plant isn’t crying! With a little help decoding this behavior and one simple adjustment, your leafy buddy will be back to normal in no time.

Why Does a Plant Create Water Droplets?

There are three main reasons you may spot water droplets on your plants. Learn about each of them to identify which may be causing your plant’s droplets.

Transpiration

This fancy term is used to describe a plant’s natural water exchange process. A plant sucks up water from its roots, and when it has received as much as it needs, it releases the excess water through its leaves. Think of it as a plant’s version of sweating.

Dew

Dew may cause water droplets on houseplant leaves in much the same way as it causes droplets on your lawn. When there is a temperature difference between the plant and its surrounding air, atmospheric moisture will condense on the warmer surface, the plant’s leaves.

Guttation

Guttation is a process by which plants release water, nutrients and minerals in the form of xylem sap. This sap is often mistaken for plain water and is most common in certain varieties of plants, such as succulents and fruit and vegetable plants.

Are Water Droplets a Problem?

Not necessarily. Dew droplets are fine, as are small quantities of transpiration droplets and natural guttation in affected plants. However, if you see more than a drop or two falling off the end of your plant’s leaves, this is likely a sign of overwatering and needs to be addressed.

What Are Other Symptoms of Overwatering?

To confirm that overwatering is the underlying issue, check for these other side effects:

If any of these symptoms resonate with you, it’s time to reevaluate your watering schedule.

How Do I Fix a Waterlogged Plant?

In most cases, the solution is to stop watering until the soil is completely dry throughout, usually a few weeks. To ensure the soil is appropriately dry, dig a finger in deep, or use a wooden chopstick or moisture meter. Be sure to check multiple places in the pot for a holistic picture.

However, if your plant exhibits all signs outlined above, it’s best to repot it, trimming off any rotten roots, which will appear black and mushy.

How Do I Properly Water My Plant Going Forward?

The key to giving your plant the right amount of water is to consistently check the soil. If it is completely dry throughout, as explained above, water the plant until it drains freely from the bottom of the pot. The pot should feel heavy and the soil should look moist, but there shouldn’t be any standing water at the surface. If the soil is not yet dry throughout, wait a few days and then check again.

Am I Doing This Right?

Good plant parenting is all about getting to know your individual plants and listening to their natural rhythms. Always trust the plant itself over your calendar notifications for watering, and you’ll do just fine. And if after all this you’ve decided you’re not a green thumb after all, don’t underestimate the aesthetic appeal of a good artificial plant.

Christmas Decor From Nature: How to Make DIY Porch Pots https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/christmas-decor-from-nature/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/project/christmas-decor-from-nature/#respond Fri, 09 Dec 2022 17:27:56 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=project&p=496174 With just a few evergreen branches, you can create the perfect winter porch pots. Add festive ornaments, lights or ribbons and the arrangement takes on a decidedly festive look. The holiday extras can be removed after New Year's Day and the porch pots will retain their winter beauty for several weeks.

How many branches you'll need depends on the width of the container and the type of greenery you use. If the container is 12 inches wide, each layer should have about six to eight branches. The container can have as many layers as needed to make it look full. That's usually four to five. It's better to have a few extra branches than too few. You want to add as much greenery, pine cones or ornaments as needed to cover the soil.

Part of the fun of Christmas decor from nature is that you're not really planting anything. It's easy to stick branches in the soil, pull them out to move them to another spot as many times as you want. No digging required!

Here you'll see how to build the layers of greenery, suggestions for which evergreens to use and tips to help you to create your perfect winter porch pots. If you get on a roll and want to keep going, you can make a coordinating wreath for your front door.

]]>
Gather holiday greenery

Branches should be 12 to 24 inches long. Select branches with different textures and shades of green or blue. You can also save money by snipping a few branches from plants in your landscape. Branches from juniper, yew, dogwood shrub, evergreen or winterberry holly, and evergreen trees (pine, hemlock, fir and arborvitae) are all good choices. Be selective when snipping branches. You are not pruning the shrub. Don’t take more than three or four branches from each plant. Snip from locations where nearby branches will naturally hide the missing ones.

 • Having all of your materials in one place helps you see what you have to work with.
 • Lay out the greenery, keeping each type separate.
 • Keep the greenery near the container so it’s easy to reach.

Floating Christmas Candles Are This Season’s Must-Have Home Decoration https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/floating-candles/ Thu, 08 Dec 2022 21:47:59 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=497515 During the holiday season, seasonal candles and incredible Christmas decor DIYs go hand in hand. Making a floating candle isn’t as daunting as it would appear. In fact, crafting your own Christmas floating candles is simple.

How to Make a DIY Floating Christmas Candle

Supplies

Christmas floating candles look elaborate, but you really only need a few supplies to pull them off.

For visual interest, it’s best to work with vases that vary in height. Ruiz kept her color scheme of red and white simple as it is true to the season. However, you can incorporate colors that match your home’s aesthetic such as decorative blue and silver fillers or Christmas red and green embellishments.

Directions

Simply follow these steps to craft your own Christmas floating candles.

 1. Soak your water beads, following the directions on the package for six to eight hours. Distilled water will have better results with the beads’ absorption than tap water.

 2. After the beads have fully expanded, grab your three or more clear glasses vases and begin to add the beads to the bottom, creating a base layer of water beads.

 3. Incorporate your decorative fillers by gently dropping the holiday trinkets in the vase.

 4. Repeat steps two and three until your vase is nearly filled to the brim.

 5. Fill your vase with water, leaving about an inch on top of your vase.

 6. Place your float candle on top of the water, light the candle and enjoy!

The Latest Trending Christmas Tree Color May Surprise You https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/red-christmas-tree/ Wed, 07 Dec 2022 21:42:11 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=496775 It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and you might be thinking about what color scheme you’ll use in your holiday decor—especially on your Christmas tree. Besides the traditional designs, it seems like there’s a new Christmas tree trend every year. From Scandinavian-inspired minimalism to a bright Christmas tree light hack that’s a definite look, the last couple of years brought something unique to the table.

Christmas tree trends vary from year to year, but there’s one bold look topping the charts right now: a red Christmas tree. Here’s why it’s the stand-out pick of Christmas tree color trends for 2022.

The Most Trendy Decoration Is… a Red Christmas Tree

Red Christmas Tree 2022 Trending Color Of The Year Via Amazon

For sticklers of natural green pine colors or flocked, snowy beauties, a red Christmas tree might be a little surprising, but the trend’s popularity is easy to unpack. Home decor retailer Christmas Central recently increased its stock of red Christmas trees due to an uptick in purchases, according to Laura Gordon, VP of e-commerce at Gordon Companies Inc.

Gordon also told Apartment Therapy that the increasing popularity of the red Christmas tree is due to its versatility. For starters, red is a traditional Christmas color that matches holiday decor items people already own. If you’ve ever decorated with Christmas colors like red and green or gold and silver, it’s a cinch to incorporate a red tree into your design this holiday season.

Plus, the variety of shades available has made the eye-catching appearance of red trees accessible to nearly everyone’s decor style. Shades available include darker reds like cherry and burgundy or bright, vivid offerings like scarlet. So whether you’re opting for a vintage Christmas design or something more modern, there’s a color out there that will work with your vibe. If you need a little inspiration for your design this season, check out these Christmas tree ideas.

Where Can I Get One?

After you engage in the time-old debate of getting a real versus a fake Christmas tree and decide on an artificial tree, it’s time to pick one out. Luckily, if you’re ready to invest in a red tree, plenty of trusted retailers are selling them online. But, unfortunately, they might be harder to snag in-store, so plan your shopping accordingly.

Some of the best options online include this Vickerman 3-foot Red Tinsel Artificial Christmas Tree from Overstock ($96), this 4-foot Red Unlit Tinsel Pop-Up Artificial Christmas Tree from The Home Depot ($50), and the 6-foot KI Store Flocked Red Artificial Christmas Tree from Amazon ($170).

And don’t forget—even though your Christmas tree is artificial, you still need to know basic Christmas tree care, such as how to store it.

Once you’ve found a red tree, you can start the best part of prepping for Christmas: decorating!

Half Christmas Trees Are the Perfect Way to Save Space This Holiday Season https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/half-christmas-tree/ Fri, 02 Dec 2022 15:38:16 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=493019 Christmas trees are a major symbol of the holiday season, but not everyone has the space to set up a whole tree, even if it’s artificial. Over the years, the popularity of one space-saving option has increased among people who live in small living spaces: artificial half Christmas trees.

What Is a Half Christmas Tree?

If you haven’t caught the trend yet, a half Christmas tree is a tree thats’s designed to look like it’s cut in half vertically. Imagine splitting a pine tree’s trunk into two vertical sections and keeping just one side of the tree. This genius idea has taken the artificial tree market by storm.

The half Christmas tree popularity boom is easy to understand: an artificial half tree still looks like a regular pine tree but takes up half the size. Therefore, you can nestle it easily into a corner or against a wall.

Half Christmas trees are artificial and come in natural or flocked versions. You can find pre-lit trees touting LED lights and pine cones, like this Home Heritage Flocked Half Christmas Tree, while other offerings are a blank canvas for you to decorate.

Benefits of a Half Christmas Tree

Why would anyone buy a half Christmas tree instead of a full-sized one?

 • It saves space: The size is the most obvious advantage of using a half Christmas tree. If you have a small space, you may not be able to fit a full-sized option. With a half tree, you can still enjoy the look of a full tree and fit it into a corner or against a back wall without it interfering with your walkway.
 • Less to decorate: If you love having a Christmas tree but hate how long it takes to decorate a full-sized one, the half tree comes in clutch. You only have to decorate half of the tree, but it’ll still look warm and inviting. You’ll save money on buying new bulbs and decorations this way, and you might even skip stringing up the lights altogether if your artificial tree comes with lights.
 • It’s budget friendly: Lastly, you may even find that many half artificial Christmas trees are on sale at much cheaper prices than their full-sized counterparts.

How to Set Up a Half Christmas Tree

Setting up a real Christmas tree requires a Christmas tree holder, a spacious spot on the floor, and an optional tree skirt. Not to mention, you also need to lift a heavy full tree to get it into the stand. A half Christmas tree doesn’t require the same process. Depending on which type of half tree you buy, you’ll either set it up with an included floor stand or mount it to the wall. Since it’s half the size, it’s half the fuss setting up!

When you’re ready to decorate, try out these Christmas tree ideas that will brighten up your home.

Where to Buy a Half Christmas Tree

You can find half Christmas trees at many retailers like Amazon, Wayfair and Kohls that ship straight to your door.

There are countless ways to show your holiday cheer, from massive yard inflatables to modest ornaments.

One debate that seems to pop up this time of year, every year, is this: When is it too early to put up Christmas decorations?

Some families break out the decorations right after Thanksgiving. Others might choose November 1, or even September 1. Some people even leave Christmas decorations up all year.

When Do You Put Up Christmas Decorations?

We decided to poll our readers to see when you put your decorations, and when you think it’s too early. See our poll results below and weigh in!

Christmas Decor History and Safety

Various decorations come with extended histories. Christmas trees date back to 16th century Germany, while Christmas stockings are believed to have originated in the 1800s, according to the Smithsonian.

Unfortunately, some of our favorite Christmas decorations, especially Christmas trees, are also huge fire hazards. Between 2014 and 2018, Christmas tree fires caused an average of two deaths, 14 injuries and $10 million in property damage every year, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Nearly half of those fires were attributed to lighting equipment and electrical distribution.

So what can you do to avoid Christmas light dangers? Follow these 13 steps, which include keeping trees away from flames, shutting off lights when you're asleep or away from home, and sufficiently watering a live tree.

8 Tips for How To Decorate a Hallway https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/tips-for-how-to-decorate-a-hallway/ https://www.familyhandyman.com/list/tips-for-how-to-decorate-a-hallway/#respond Tue, 22 Nov 2022 19:43:22 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?post_type=listicle&p=490879

Create Visual Interest With Paint

For a clean-lined hallway with visual impact, or to fill out narrow spaces where furnishings won’t fit, consider creative painting. You can create faux wainscoting with a darker paint below and a lighter tone waist-high and up.

Consider painting the ceiling in a bold color. Extend the edges down onto the top of the wall, then finish the walls with a lighter paint. Or access your inner artist and consider a distinctive pattern.

People Are Making Giant Holiday Popcorn Garlands Out of Spray Foam and We’re Impressed https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/giant-popcorn-garland/ Mon, 21 Nov 2022 21:27:14 +0000 https://www.familyhandyman.com/?p=493017 We love a good DIY holiday decoration. This year, it seems like everyone is stepping up their game to make bigger, grander and more festive decorations than ever. This giant popcorn garland is no exception. It’s a crafty spin on the popcorn garlands you’d make as a kid—but supersized.

TikTok user @JeffMacKay recently posted a video demonstrating the idea, giving us inspiration for how to add some festive fun to our homes. The best part? Whether you’re a DIY newbie or a seasoned pro, you can flex your creative muscles with this project as it just requires a few simple steps.

With this clever creation, you can transform your house into a winter wonderland.

How to Make a Giant Popcorn Garland

Ready to begin creating your very own giant popcorn garland?

Materials and Tools:

 • Plastic drop cloth
 • Protective gear, including gloves and eyewear
 • Waterpoof, closed-cell spray foam—@jeffmackay recommends using Loctite Tite Foam to avoid discoloration.
 • Plastic straws
 • Scissors
 • Red shatterproof plastic ornaments
 • Hot glue gun
 • Twine or fishing line

Directions

 1. First, set up your popcorn-making station by covering a workspace with a plastic drop cloth. This will prevent your DIY decoration from sticking. Be sure that it’s a large enough area to prevent any potential spray foam spatter from touching other surfaces. We recommend moving your work outdoors, if possible, for extra ventilation. Our biggest tip for working with spray foam is to wear disposable gloves, protective eyewear and proper work clothes. While acetone can work in a pinch to dissolve uncured foam, cured foam is extremely tricky to get off of unwanted surfaces.
 2. To form the oversized “popcorn” use spray foam to create cloud-like clusters around the center of each straw. Spray in loose, random motions. The fluffier, the better. You should be able to create one eight-foot strand per bottle of spray foam. Let dry according to the manufacturer’s directions, usually for about 8-24 hours.
 3. Once the foam popcorn pieces are cured, grab each piece of “popcorn” and snip the excess straws on each side so they are not sticking out. Try to snip it as close to the spray foam as you can to get a genuine popcorn look. Repeat this step until all of your popcorn pieces are trimmed.
 4. Next, create a small hole in each ornament by slowly pressing a hot glue gun tip to melt through the plastic at the opposite side of the cap. Depending on how hot your glue gun is, this may take a few minutes for each, so patience is key. These ornaments will serve as your “cranberries” in this larger-than-life twist on a holiday classic.
 5. Last, remove the ornament cap and pull the twine or fishing line through the ornament. Alternate threading the popcorn by pulling the string through the straw hole and the red “cranberry” ornaments to create your own design. Ta-da! You’ve created your own giant popcorn garland.

Where to Hang It

Once you’ve successfully made your own giant popcorn garland decoration, it’s time to hang it for you (and your neighbors) to admire. Hang a strand along a porch fence to add festive flair or drape it around your exterior door to give your home a fun, gingerbread house vibe. Bonus points if you add holiday lights for a merry nighttime display. It ranks amongst our favorite outdoor Christmas decorations. Note, however, that harsh weather may cause the foam popcorn to degrade.

If you’re looking to decorate indoors, remember that spray foam is flammable, so avoid hanging the garland around the fireplace, candles or other open flames. Instead, try it hanging it as a swag for your staircase for a whimsical touch.
