Check it Out: DEWALT Cordless Stud/Joist Drill
We tested out this drill designed for rough-in work. Read on to see how it stacked up.
The number one thing pros worry about when deciding between corded and cordless tools is power. While it’s true that being able to make cuts and drill holes without being attached to a cord or a generator is a major plus, it’s not an option if it means sacrificing power. The editors here at CPT took a look at a DEWALT’s Cordless Stud/Joist drill and were really surprised by the amount of power it packed for being a cordless tool.
The DEWALT FLEXVOLT 60-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless Brushless 1/2 in. Stud and Joist Drill is a heavy-duty cordless drill made for quickly punching through studs and joists. The drill has two variable speed settings, maxing out at 1250 RPM’s. That makes its top speed just 50 RPM’s less than DEWALT’s corded Stud and Joist Drill.
It is a bit on the heavy side, so unless you have a lot of upper-body strength, it’s probably not the best tool if you need to drill a lot of holes in a ceiling. Electricians and plumbers who do a lot of rough-in work and are tired of cords and power convertors should definitely check out this drill.
This drill has two variable speed ranges, operating at either 0-300 RPM’s or 0-1250 RPM’s depending on the application. At top speed, the drill will knock through framing lumber surprisingly easily. We used it to build a set here in our studio and found that it made clean holes in all types of lumber.
